Ok all been very active buying and selling for years kinda wore myself out on pocket clip folders, for somereason I had never owned A slipjoint. Well I decided to take the plunge and picked up an orange case slimline trapper and what can I say it really really impressed me, I believe it's the simplicity of them. I came across the gec ivory models and I cannot stop staring at them, can anyone reccomend the best and most stocked gec dealers? And can anyone give the rundown on the ivory executive whittlers? Would these be good for carrying or are they geared more for collecting? Thank you everyone in advance I'm pretty excited about my new hobby.
Btw, I am a firefighter I carry a spyderco cts-Xhp at work and a sebenza 25 off duty....looking for some nice slipjoints to ride along, thanks again.

Welcome Texaspridejb!!! All I can say is CASE is a great brand and GEC as well. I was raised on CASE knives but GEC has taken fit and finish to another level. Sorry I can't help answering your questions about dealers off hand or about the Whittlers other than they'd be great as both a collectable and a definite user.

I fall into the camp where I think all knives deserve to be used ;)

Anyway, thanks for your post and look forward to your insight and any stories from your past---one can never talk to much about family and knives :p

Welcome,

Paul

Welcome to the addiction. GEC has redefined traditional knives for me. I love them. :) Also, they scream to be used.

Enjoy!

Welcome to the addiction... It'll be hard to quit... :D

can anyone recommend the best and most stocked gec dealers?

I can think of four knife dealers who have BF Dealer memberships and who carry GEC knives.

In Alphabetical order:
*Collector Knives.net
*Grand Prairie Knives
*Knives Ship Free
*Old hundred Collectables

GEC are perfectly useable knives. In fact probably the most useful slipjoints I've owned. Case, is a great place to start as well, many seem to hold them to an impossible standard, and like to point out every imperfection with them, but at their price point I feel like they're a great deal. Buck has some very utilitarian models like the 301, and 303, that are real workhorses. Then you have the inexpensive, but serviceable Rough Rider, that are Chinese, and on the lower end of the price spectrum.

Thanks guys I sincerely appreciate the responses I'm really liking the riverboat gambler amongst many others from gec.

I started with a 22 rifle and a Case slipjoint; I'll probably go to my grave with a GEC slipjoint and a 22 rifle. I have pocket clips galore, but I find myself moving back to slipjoints since I absolutely do not believe I could win a knife fight and the quick deploy function of many with clips is not something that greatly appeals to me. Have them though and yeah, they're fun.

I very much like the 2012 Traditional BF knife if you want a comfortable pocket knife that is large enough to use (it's a #74 with a wharncliffe and clip point blades). I personally lean toward a slightly larger pocket slip joint and am still trying out both the #23 Pioneer and #42 Missouri Trapper patterns. I have a feeling I will be settling on the 4.25" #42 as my preferred all around slip joint carry (other than a SAK). So, I guess I'm saying that I like a larger pocket knife in a Trapper pattern.

Added: If I seldom used a knife, I would probably go with a smaller size. But I use a knife every day.

I like the burnt stag also. Only my Ben Hogan is burnt stag at the moment, but I prefer it.

I'm new to slip-joints also, having stumbled upon this forum and discovering the outstanding quality of GEC pocket knives. I studied many threads and posts and drooled over pics til I just HAD to have one! I started with a single blade #55 Houndstooth and now also have a TC Barlow. These two are my constant companions and I've really grown to appreciate the outstanding quality, fit and finish of GEC.
