I just signed on, I have a question. What is the idea behind "Butterfly or Baliho" type knives?

About me, A couple dozen Case Russlocks, some Razors, some Baby Docs,Trapper lock, and a Hobo(not my Uncle) A nice Micro tech, LUND,
A couple Spyderco Delica 4s VG-10 one Serrated Edge Knife, one plain, A few Kershaws, A new Benchmade Mini Grip Tillian (customized) on its way. A few Swiss army, a few really old Callimus knives 60 + years like new. A few Leatherman. A Gerber, A couple of Imperials (Irish made) I am sure there is something I am leaving out. I am now just getting serious about collecting.
Oh yea whats a Barlow? I have one made in Japan I almost threw out? along with a 50 year old Boy scout knife. Thanks for your answers about the Butterfly knife (which I forgot someone gave me)

The balisong is a simple knife to make with limited materials and facilities. A sliplock folder or lockback folder requires close tolerances to work properly and safely. The balisong can be made very loose and when open or closed is safe to use or carry. If I remember correctly they first were made in the Philippines, not to much to work with on most of the islands. I've seen some very basic homemade examples with a reshaped file blade and wood handles with nails used for pins. They can be really nice, just look at Darrel Ralph's work. The bonus is they are fun to play with, just be carefull with a sharp blade! And welcome to the forum.
