First off, I love this forum and I have been a lurker for some time now. I love handmade blades. I especially love handmade tomahawks and would really appreciate some advice.

I was trying to get in touch with Steve Liley at Coal Creek Forge but I get an auto response saying hes retired. Who else can you all recommend to me? I want this tomahawk to be functional for heavy use (for when I go camping and hiking)and also nice to look at.

I love the hammer pole style because the hammer side is also really functional.

thank you
Carisa

G'day and welcome to the forum :)
I'm not a tomahawk expert but it may be worthwhile looking at the work of forum member Storm Crow. He does some very nice work.
To help the others with suggestions, what sort of price range are you looking at?

Look at H&B forge....I don't own one, but I have been looking at hawks lately, and there are multiple favorable reviews for them here on BF. At some point I will be purchasing one and trying it for myself.

I've done extensive research trying to determine which hawk to get for my own first tomahawk and I think if you are looking for a wood handled classic H&B Forge and 2hawks are your best options. Both have multiple hammer polled selections. H&B Forge is less expensive and done in the traditional way of wrapping some 1020 around a piece of 1095 for a hardened bit, hammer forged. Has a beautiful rustic look to it. 2Hawks heads are a high quality cast process with hardened bit and poll(when applicable) 6150 I believe is the steel they use. Much more "polished" appearance and pricier than H&B Forge but still well within your budget. Both have a good warranty. I have not heard a single bad thing about either.

I went with an H&B large camp partially because of my current budget, I hope to own a 2hawks as well someday. I still haven't seen a direct side by side working review of the two.

I can't say enough good things about H&B Forge.

I have a nice Damascus hawk from Steve at Coal Creek Forge that I'm selling. There's an old thread in the for sale section if you search for it I'm sure that it'll pop up.

If you don't find something else that fits what you're looking for send me a PM and I'll make you a fair deal on it.

The H&B and Wokf Creek hawks look great but the 2Hawks Warbeast and especially the Long Hunter are as sexy as a hawk can get.

RMJ might still have some of the 200 Little Bird hawks that they made for this year available if you're willing to go a bit less traditional.

Good luck in your search and be sure to mention to him that all of us blade junkies think he's a pretty lucky guy.

thank you for the compliment :)

WOW what a beautiful piece by Steve. Is demascus too nice for real use? Its a beautiful piece and I know my man likes to use his tools. Im definitely interested in but need to make sure its fine for work and real use. How easily is that finish damaged for basic stuff like chopping wood and hammering stakes and whatnot? I don't know much about demascus steel so please bare with me.

Concerning the Long Hunter by 2Hawks, what do you like about it so much? As far as performance is concerned which would perform better that demascus piece or the long hunter?

The Damascus will perform very well, it's just a combination of two steels that are twisted and folded together. Steve uses good steel for his stuff so it's not an issue to use it. The finish is made by etching it in something like ferric chloride or some other acid or it'd look pretty much like any other steel. The acid eats the two different steels at different rates so the pattern emerges, the longer it's in the acid the darker it gets. As it's used it'll eventually wear the dark off of it but to most of us that just adds character. It can be easily refinished by a quick dip( you can pick up the ferric chloride at radio shack ).

I've read once here in a thread that the 2hawks are made a different way and that they're not as durable but that was right after the current gentleman took over the shop, I've heard nothing but good things since. I think they make theirs by pouring the molten metal into a form instead of hammer forging it. Some say that's less durable but I don't think most people would ever be able to tell even if it was. I'll be getting a 2hawks long hunter eventually because I like the way that they look and want to try it out- they're beautiful hawks and I don't think that they'd have their great reputation if they weren't worth the money.

Yes 2 Hawks are cast but it makes no difference in there performance. At least not that I can tell with mine.

I refer mine forged if for no other reason I really dig handmade things and I love the look of good old fashioned hammer marks.

Something about that look seems so much more authentic to me.
