Hi guys my name is Brad. I have just purchased a cold steel LTC Kukri. I was trying to do some research on these knives when I ran across this site. It looks like I may have cracked my wallet to early.

I love the way Uncle Bill's Khukri's look. I only spent $50 on the cold steel blade used so I should be able to part with some more cash to get a real Khukri. I love the way they look and have been reading about you guys talk about how tough they are. Just got done with the "bear" topic.LOL

I usually stick to the car message boards but I love weapons too. This looks like my next semi large purchase. Which Khukri should I get? What are your favorites?

There is a pic of my car in my sig by the way. It is a 93 Z28 with 79,000 miles, hooker cat-back exhaust, hypertech chip, 160 thermostat, bmr lower control arms, and a moroso cold air induction. That is all that comes to mind right now. Nice to meet you guys

Brad

Hello, Brad

Let me be the first to welcome you to the cantina!
But I better warn you that HKIV - a disease we all end up with - develops pretty quickly and there is not a known cure to this. And before you realize you will have a dozen khukuris around you... I know! It happened to me!
Best regards

I know what you mean. I have been drooling over the himalayan imports site for the past hour. I love these things. I can't believe it took me this long to find them.

Thanks for the welcome.

Brad:
Let me be the second to say hello. Since Ivan and I are the last two aboard this forum, it's only fitting that we greet the next "newbie". Actually, Ivan isn't a newbie, as he is quite a knifemaker in his own right (catch his web page), but even so, the Khukuri snares us all. If you do a web search on Nepal, and get into the culture and people (beyond the tourist and trekking sites) it will only add to the mystique of the blade.

Welcome to the cantina, Brad. Pretty nice car, a friend of mine has one like it. Personally, though, I like older cars...Mine's a '73 Lotus Europa.

About Khuks; I haven't ever seen the LTC, but I hear it is pretty light. You may be suprised at just how beefy some of the HI's are. But beware, HIKV is particularly virulent, 'round here.

For a first Khuk, you can't go wrong with a WWII, and of course the ang kholas are all great too. But I'd have to recommend going with something a little different to start with. The 18th century is one of my favorites, and the YCS is also excellent. Whatever you pick, though, you'll like it. Truth is they're all great knives, so don't take our advice...find the one that says "buy me" and go for it, you won't be disappointed.

WOW. Virulent, I don't here that word everyday.LOL Especially on car forums. You are lucky to catch a person that can form a complete sentence, much less some one with a vocabulary. I have been browsing the bigger blades. I have always wanted a sword and those 20-25 inch Khukri's appear to be right up my alley.

Brad,

I don't usually think about my vocabulary, but I guess that just comes from being a language major. You'll definately like the forum, here, though. There are alot of really great people here.

And if you want a swordlike khukuri, there are plenty of those around, too. Have you seen the 25" Kumar Kobra? That's a heck of a knife. There is also a picture of a 25" sirupati further down on the forum, if you haven't seen it already.

I suggest that you don't worry about wich one will be your first as you will end up with a bunch of then, anyway.
Look what happened to me less than 1 MONTH after getting my first HI (though I have owned other khukuris before):

with me now: 1 HI
ordered: 1 HI, 1 GH
In transit: 3 GH, 2 HI, one WWII original from many trades
In negotaition: 4 HI, 1 GH.

Is it enough for you?
Regarding models, maybe a 15" sirupati or one a little longer would be a good idea. I have just orderd a 18th Century with steel fittings and can't wait to get it! it is one of my top 3, no doubt. A Kobra in any size is great, too. Too hard to choose, man, just too hard.

MDN, Welcome to cantina! You'll find this to
be a really nice group of folks. Hey buddy,
feel right at home, many of us are newbies.
There are those here who can provide you an amazing depth of knowledge on the subject of Khukuris and blades in general. Especially on
the practical matters (sharpening, fixes/customizing, carrying, etc...) Also use
the 'search' button to check out threads related to topics of your interest. I think each and every one of us has asked the question of "Which one to get first?" I personally feel that Matt H has given you an
excellent answer to this. I bought an 18" WWII first, but thats an arguable choice.
Actually it doesn't matter because of the quality of the blades themselves, you will not be dissappointed with any HI choice you make. And the forum moderator/HI General Mgr.
'Uncle' Bill Martino... you could'nt ask for someone better to do business with. Stands
behind HI's products 100%. MDN, have fun

MDN... prepare to be astounded. I am new here also. I own 2 kuks, both I have recieved in the past month. Being in college my money is scarce...but these are worth the sacrifice. (And if I need more cash I can always go chop up some 50 gallon drums and sell them to the freshmen... they always have money to burn)If you are a real MDN I suggest a Kobra. I got a 20" as my first and was very impressed. I am now saving for a Katana, and later will finish off my family of Kobras and AK's.

Buy all you want... they will make more.

Dave

Welcome NINJA!
I love your ride! I'm looking for a Z28 Camero for my wife. One of the last true american muscle cars! If U like muscle then you will love khukuris!! Uncle Bill recomends 1st time buyers get the 15 inch Ang Khola. I also recomend this. Unbreakable blade indeed!! See ya around!

Welcome to the cantina. Just over a year ago I triped into this forum, I started with one, then another. Now I have quite a few. One of these beauties will talk to ya, let ya know that it needs to come home with ya. watch the board for the deals that uncle Bill will post.

good looking car. Granted I have always thought that a car is just something to go and get parts for the motorcycle with

Welcome! Just got bit by the khukuri bug myself and started dropping in here. My first (and only so far
frown.gif
) was a 25" sirupati. Just love this thing. They are tough. Full power, 2 handed swings are easily handled. The blade is quite manageable with one hand, however. Limbing trees are a breeze and 3" saplings are cleaved with a single stroke. A 20" Kobra will probably be the next on my list as I feel it would be better suited for brush removal and light limbing due to it's lighter weight and thinner blade.

Welcome aboard, you are doomed. This is the nicest, most helpful group of guys I have encountered on the web. HIKV will be your downfall.

What kinds of chores do you plan to do with your future khukuri(s), MDN? That might help narrow down your choice for first khukuri.

Welcome to the Cantina and pull up a pew.

As for first khukuri, the usual suspects have already given you some ideas. I would suggest you keep a lookout for the UBDOTD (Uncle Bill's Deal of the Day) where you can pick up a decent khukuri, sometimes at a discount to what they normally go for. Blems are offered occassionally - good route to go if you want to save money and get a feel for khukuris. Another thing to do is email Uncle Bill and explain your situation and he will do his best to fix you up with a good khukuri.

Harry

Yep, welcome to the Cantina. I'm late getting here as the VA ate up almost all of the day yesterday and has me running late today.

Good looking car! I wish I had a pix of my old 65GTO. I still have my 72 El Camino I bought new, special factory order with heavy duty towing package (I pull a 19 foot fifth wheel also special made for El Camino or Ranchero) -- 402 big block, everything stock except for Holley double pumper. 217,000 miles and still going strong.

Now that the cars are out of the way take your time and try to get what you want. Harry made a good suggestion in that watching for the UBDOTDs or blems in a good place to get started.

Chores? I noticed you guys actually use these things.
biggrin.gif
My use would be decoration and sheer coolness. I love these things! They would make excellent conversation pieces. And I'll be the guy that still has these things in mint condition when all of you are looking for them in 40 years. I'm sure they will appreciate nicely.

Thanks for the suggestions.
And by the way, my car experience is not just with modern day muscle cars I have also owned 2 55 Chevy belairs and 2 74 Novas. I also had an 88 Mustang GT that was pretty dang nice. I miss them all.

Should have never sold them.

Bwuhhaaaaahaaa...fresh meat. Welcome Brad, we always like to have new sacrific...uhhh forumites here

If you find you're coming down with HIKV, just drop a line to Jim Clifton. He thinks he's immune, but he's very good at making up denials and such, which I'm sure he can pass on to you.

(PS, 25" Kobra is the way to go, esp. if you can get one made by Bura! "Course, then there's the Everest Katana, which I promise myself I'll get one day...)
