Hi Jinx or ADV Mini Butcher

Hi folks - I'm new to the forums as my addictive tendencies have been peaking lately. I've always carried a folder, but lately have been seeking out designs that are more visually distinctive as well as being useful daily. I'm a user and not a collector, but I'm a very visually driven person. So it is more from a practical and investment standpoint that I am asking here, of those who might have owned one or both knives. Of the two, the CRKT Hi Jinx, and the ADV Mini Butcher, which would be the better investment in terms of later resale if (when) I choose to sell one and buy the latest knife that grabs my fancy? Which is a more practical user knife? I should note that I am a big fan of weight / heft in a folder, so that does not discourage me. My current favorite EDCs are a Microtech Whaleshark, and a Brous Silent Soldier, to give you a reference. I'm not out in the wilderness skinning bears and making thatched huts to overnight in, and for now there will be no zombie killing in my immediate future, though if that happens tomorrow it's good to know that I've got a 3-inch flipper at the ready. So any insight on these two knifes would be welcome, especially from those who have owned one or both of them.

OK, REALLY? Are these two knives so unpopular that I've left the entire membership speechless? Or did I forget to shower?

Neither are great investments for resale as both have seen fairly large price drops since the release. The Jinx because people don't associate CRKT with the upper end of the market, and the Butcher because of greater supply than demand and quality issues.

I'd go with the Hi-Jinx because its made by Lionsteel and the only reported issue of merit, is lock stick.

Best of luck!

Thanks for the input, Austonh. I had read some less than favorable criticism from one ADV customer, regarding his experience of ADV direct customer-service (or lack thereof). Damn shame as I'm really drawn to Wharncliffe blades, and that one is pretty distinctive. The other that teases me is Hinderer's XM-18 Wharncliffe. (corrected - thanks Blues)

You mean Hinderer?

Why not just get one of these:confused:
At least you'll know you got your money's worth...

Yes, meant Hinderer. I have a small Sebe and I appreciate it, but it bores the heck out of me (no offense intended as I certainly can appreciate the purity of purpose and excellence of details...a very Zen knife...but of the handful of knifes I have and circulate it spends the least time in my pocket. I tend to do a bit of controlled, precision cutting on a fairly regular basis...a utility knife would otherwise by my go-to. Hence the draw to wharncliffe designs that can be easily manipulated. Thanks for the suggestion and the great pic too!

Sebenzas aren't for everyone, but have you tried the insingo blade? It's great for precision cutting, in fact, that's what it's meant for. Other than that, I'd opt for a hinderer. You can't go wrong there:thumbup:

Speaking of the ADV Butcher, there's another knife that comes to mind: the "Trouble Bladeworks Debt Collector"

Yea, and my Ford is better than your Chevy...
Get real dude...

It was a joke, I guess you missed the '!!!' at the end...your pill is in the mail....

Staying on topic, the OP should take a look at Jeremy Robertson's El Patron. I think it fits the bill, it's a full custom, and right around the price tag of a Hinderer, maybe less depending on where he decides to get it from.

Worth a look, it's a great EDC.

I forgot to mention that it might just be the best reviewed custom that is affordable....

If you're worried about investment value, don't buy a knife. There's no telling where the market will be when you decide you want a different knife. Buy whatever you want, worst case scenario you'll still probably be able to recover the majority of the purchase price. Just don't buy expecting to make a profit.

Agreed. The problem is it does happen, and it gives the wrong impression. Nobody knows what the next knife or maker to go through the roof will be, so investment value is a target that's tough to aim for.

I am sticking with the El Patron in this price range.
A quick Google search or just a search on this forum will give you a multitude of un-biased opinions on the knife.

Good luck, I hope you end up finding something that fits your needs.

Nah, I'm not the type to go through the roof, but I do like to hedge my bets whenever possible and look to others with more experience for sage advice. I'll check out some of these recommendations in the customs and midtech options. Oh, and Blues...The Debt Collector: LOVE IT! That's my kind of blade! Thanks all! Keep'em coming. I appreciate the guidance.

I'd also take a look at the Reate District 9 Tanto. Packs a solid overbuilt heft to it with great fit and finish. Also comes in around $200 so you're less likely to see a significant loss on resale.

GPknives has the best price, and free shipping, if you were interested.

Blues, my small is and Insigno...I'll take my Yojimbo 2 or Silent Soldier for precision...believe it or not. Just prefer the Wharncliffe...like handling a razor.... and now I can't get that Debt Collector out of my head! Checked out the El Patron and the Reate District 9. Both very nice, but don't click with me quite the same as the knives I've mentioned. Oh man, that Debt Collector...if only it were just a bit smaller...might be a bit intimidating to bring to work. 3.5" is the carry limit in my town, but even though that is exactly that, it just seems so much larger. Thanks guys!

Post pics when you get it:D:p;)

Oh dude, that's harsh...I thought you were going to offer to sell me yours  What's the price point? Everything on his page is sold. I found a listing for a used one at $550. I don't imagine they come up often(?)

I enjoy my full sized butcher, its a pretty useful tool and is fun to flip, nice action. I agree that his customer service can be lacking but not the worst ive had. I imagine the mini Butcher would be more wieldly as the full size has a bit of a large blade. But I would buy it again. You can get them on different online dealers if you wanna avoid dealing directly with him.

Thank you, Robert. I'm glad to hear from someone who owns one. I've read just a bit of what's been discussed here in the forum on him and do take it with the perspective of social media (with more than just a grain of salt). I have read some criticism of what seems to be limited to the earlier batches and a single bad customer experience told from only one perspective. Not that any of that is invalid...but it's good to hear from other individuals and I'm glad they take the time to speak up. At 3.5" cutting edge, the large is pushing my local legal limit (3.5" blade for carry - so don't know if LEO is going to overlook the rest of the blade in this or any other like my WhaleShark which also has right about 3.5" of cutting edge). That's what is keeping me to the Mini version. Thanks for taking the time to post.
