I've had a number of HI khukuris over the past 3 years and with minimal maintenance and hard use find them to be very durable. Interestingly, the ones requiring the most maintenance are the kothimodas or specials with silver in them requiring a fair amount of Brasso polish and elbow grease to keep nice and shiny.

Handle splitting has not been a problem with either wood or horn handles.

I've had the occassional blade chip, but this is remedied fairly easily.

All in all, I'm pleased with HI khukuri durability.

:)

Amen to that. I am very new to the world of HI khukuris, but I have no doubt that my khukuris will outlast me.

The black horn of the handles is particulary resistant. In my opinion we have not a such good quality of horn in europe actualy.

Thats for sure.;) Horn handle is great in the cold weather to!!!!:D IMHO.........The only problem is that the handle became loose after a good workout and all I did is tighten the diamond shaped pommel nut and it was as good as new.:D

HI khukuris are durable

A leaf spring on a vehicle is subjected to flexing and returning to true hundreds of thousands of times during the life of the vehicle. Over time they may lose some of their arc, but it's rare indeed to ever see one actually break. You would have to look far and wide to find a tougher raw material for a big chopping knife. The basic design of the khukuri, blade, tang, and handle, have been perfected over several centuries. If anything was flawed in the design, it would have been corrected long ago, since people who depend on their knives for their very livelihood can't afford to have them break. If you ever break an HI khukuri with your bare hands (e.g., not by driving a tank over it) consider yourself to have been struck by lightning without the usual discomfort of being scorched. :D

I think a good spring steel is the best possible choice for big choppers. And the kamis get the conversion right 99.9% of the time.
