So as I have been reading threads, old and new, I have noticed a lot of abbreviated language as well as terminology that is specific to Khukuri's. If there is a thread about this already please someone lead me to the link. If not, could we get some postings to help out the newer, less informed as to the language of HI?

Super CAK... Would that be Chiruwa Ang Khola?

Fullers- Is that the engraved lines at the spine of the blade or the ripples in the blade like on the Foxy Folly?

Karda just let me know that Chiruwa means that it has the full tang with the rivets.

This is the kind of stuff that would be helpful to some of us newbie's.

Bring on the wealth of secret language. :thumbup:

The term fuller is often used to describe both. Which can be somewhat confusing. That is why we tend to use the Nepali terminology here. The Spine fuller is called the Aunlo-bal and the blade fuller is called Chirra.

Karda you are a wealth of information. I thought I knew a lot about knives until I found this forum. I will get it down eventually. Thanks again for your help! :)
 
well, you likely only need to learn how to say what you already know the way they do in Nepal now.
For me it is the other way, I am a gun nut and knew nothing about knives until recently.
So now I find myself using the Nepalese terms and being corrected elsewhere. :o

H.I. = Himalayan Imports
Auntie = Yangdu
Uncle = Bill, r.i.p.
DOTD = Deal of the Day
OMG = what you say when you see a DOTD ;)

Dui Chirra = Double (blade) fuller
Tin Chirra = Triple (blade) fuller
GRS = Ganga Ram Special
BAS = British Army Service
ASTK = Amar Singh Thapa Kukri
AK = Ang Khola

It also helps to go to the Himalayan Imports website, and read EVERY PAGE.

Not only is it great reading (I especially like the story of how Yangdu would fend off Indian men trying to "make time" with her on the train), but they go into some serious detail on the construction of kukris and WHY they work the way they do, what to look for to get certain performance from different models, etc.

I thought I had read most of them but obviously not. Missed the story of Yangdu altogether. Might need to spend some serious time this weekend on checking through all the links again.

A Super CAK is a sort-of Chiruwa Ang Khola which has been heavily hybridized with features from other khukris; the Chitlangi, M43, Bonecutter, and Dui Chirra more than any others. It's mostly Dui Chirra. What makes it "super" is it is much lighter and faster, and better balanced, than a typical Chiruwa Ang Khola, making it handle more like a short sword than a heavy brute force power chopper.

No problem, I been tryin to figure them out over time as well. Stick around for awhile and it'll all soak in.
 
There is the PDF I compiled that Karda has linked to which has a number of them on it.
It isn't a very big file, even a dial up could DL it in no time.

I am also happy to update it if you all feel the need to do so but then it is also up to Karda.
He would then have to update the link and if he isn't wanting to do so, then I won't bother.

I was reading through the HI site again today and found it (about halfway down the page):

When Yangdu was a young girl and used to travel to India to visit relatives she would ride what is called the "night bus." The male passengers would often try to become amorous with female passengers during the darkness of night so Yangdu would always tape a small 9 inch khukuri to the inside of her thigh. If she was approached she would reach under her anghi (long Sherpa dress) and whip out her little khukuri. Her stock phrase was, "if you want to keep that hand then keep it off me."
