I recently came across the HI Malla khukuri and I wanted to know if anyone has any information about it. The website says it was based on a very old khukuri that was found underneath the floor of the Bir Gorkha factory. It looks very similar in form to the Sirupate but im not sure if this one is a user or a showpiece...

BChou, the Malla that HI has been making is a usable khuk, as are all of their product line. Yours could be a showpiece if that is what you would want to make it and keep it as such. If it was made by one of the kamis that aren't around any more, it could possibly be considered "rare". Basically, if you want to use it, it is a user. If you want to mount it on a wall or put it under glass, then it would be a showpiece. Whatever you do with it, it is a fine khukuri and I for one am glad that it was found and is reproduced by HI.

Since I don't recognize your handle I'd like to say Welcome. You can access the Search function for this Forum, the Cantina and the Archives and possibly get more info on the Malla. I know that you'll find lots of personal opinions on this model.

Rick, thanks for the reply. I'll look into the Malla. I expected it to be fully functional being a HI piece, but the high price and description on the website made it sound kinda like a historical reproduction rather than a work horse like the AKs.

Whoa there. How high a price? Have you checked out the Himalayan Imports website yet? They still make the model and I got one pretty cheap last year as a DOTD. A carved handle or an engraved blade may make it a special make.

I don't know about the DOTD Mallas I've never seen one, but on the online store they go for $175 which is way outta my price range.
