It all started on that fateful day when, after looking through the gallery, i went over to AKS and realized how cheap all the steels i had wanted knives made out of were, and so i started drooling. and searching. and repeating. first, it was stan buzek, who sent me so many pretty "scraps" that i am still afraid to use. then, after a while i hooked up with fluidsteel, and he got me sick with the knifemaking fever. i started grinding, and then, next thing you know, i have a forge, a couple of files, some sandpaper, and 3 blades. then, it all went downhill. I was doing ok, and then, i pressed the buy button. aldo, i blame you. why is your steel so cheap? now, i will have 12 feet of steel to contend with over the school year. you all will be getting a letter from my lawyer.

(i am actually seriously pumped. 4 foot of 1/8x1 1084, 4 feet of 1 1/2x 3/16 1084, and 4 feet of 1/4x2 5160. i can't wait. also, i am not sure how that turned into a knifemakers anonymous meeting statement to a rant. anyway, rant off.)

I have been thinking of trying to make my own knives lately, maybe ill end up making a thread like this in the future. lol

DON'T BLAME ME!!!! I'M INNOCENT!!!! :D:D:D All I did was give a "sample" of 1080 to go with the 1080 YOU bought from me.... and a "free(on)" tank.....Just in case you wanted to forge......;)

Quit your "real" job yet? Sell off your cars/guitars/stocks & bonds to buy tools and steel? No? Then you're not truly addicted, ya poser... :D

Get out now while there's still time to save your sanity, relationships and any reasonable hope of retiring before you keel over dead with shaved arms/legs and the stench of hot steel permanently imbedded in your nostrils. ;).

....shaved arms/legs....
I went over to a knifemaking "friends" (G.Haile's) house... and his arms looked like he was 3 days into chemo therapy... patchy hair growing here and there... He said when he started, he'd try to keep it even, but progressed into randomly shaving the first area the blade came to...

I'm literally counting the days(years) of alimony I have left until I can quit my job and become a starving artist....:D:D

Steven....just tell everyone your an artist! The ladies LOVE artists!

Well, it's official.......you are no longer just the geek. You are now the KNIFE geek!!!

Everyone say hi to Steven! The first step is admitting you have a problem, but honestly I wouldn't worry until you have over 50 feet of 5160, and have converted your garage into a knife making shop that is covered in metal, wood, and micarta dust 24/7.
My name is Ben and I have a problem.

....LOL...Well hello steven welcome to the club, however i must agree w/ mr. terrio ur not truly addicted yet....your justnow recognizing what "the first one is free" has done to you, your on the fast track messin with aldo though!! for someone whose annual income is under 500 bucks, yeah, this is a big step. i don't have a real job, i have no cars, no stocks, and my guitar is basically worthless. as far as getting out goes, nah. i'm happy.

It is certainly an obsession that is a money AND time pit... it just seemed normal to me to want to stay in the shop instead of going out with my buddies during this week off.... and trying to explain to your girlfriend why you were so "busy" you couldn't go out the last 3 nights :D They just don't seem to get it! lol

Moving back to your parents' house in your mid 20's, just so you can afford to be a knife maker shows true addiction. Or something.

Funny you mentioned seeing steel at http://www.alphaknifesupply.com I used to look through the Cold Steel catalog, then knife supply catalogs and think I could easily make those same knives for cheap!

Odd... about 18 years later and I still don't think I've made a Cold Steel Recon, Trailmaster, etc. ;) :D

This is quite possibly one of the funniest things I have read all day. My fiance hates it when I'm messing with knives because I'll have patches of hair missing from my arms, belly or legs.

Hello Steven, Still waiting for you to come on down and play at my shop. Just wait until you see what a power hammer and press can do:D. Next time Brian comes down you will have to try and come along. Hope we can get a mini hammerinn going. That would be really fun.

DON'T GO STEVEN!!! IT'S A TRAP... I WENT DOWN TWICE NOW AND I SPENT THE LAST HOUR(HONESTLY) LOOKING AT MILLS AND POWER HAMMERS FOR SALE ONLINE... :D:D:D Since I went down there I've bought 2 anvils, 3 hammers, 2 pair of tongs, a disc grinder, PID controller for my forge, and more.......

Seriously, I'd be happy to pick you up. Greg Haile also wants to go down.

Here's a couple blades we made. Chuck made the San Mai with a small helping from me. The Fighter I forged to shape, but didn't forge the bevels as I started with stock that was a little too wide.

I've learned SOOOOO much from spending time down there. Seriously, spending time with a full time knife maker is extremely valuable.

I don't have a problem:grumpy: Just because I will skip meals, and only get my hair cut once a year so I can afford materials, doesn't mean I have a problem. Yeah I did save up for 6 months to build a grinder, but it has other uses and I need it any how.

:p
