Hi everyone, I'm new to the world of knives, although I've been studying swords of various types for quite a while. I've been considering purchasing an all-purpose knife for outdoors applications and for hiking. From my involvement in the sword world, I've learned about Cold Steel and their products, and I received their "Solid Proof" DVD a while ago. I know from some people in the sword community that their sword, while far from traditional, are very tough and perfectly serviceable. However, I've searched the forums here and it seems that their knives don't have a very good reputation. Now, I've seen in the sword community the debate over products from Generation 2, Hanwei, and all such makers, and it seems everyone has their favorite. Are there any major reasons why I shouldn't buy a Cold Steel knife? What exactly is the problem with their products? As for the knife I'm looking to buy, are there any recommendations in for my needs? I can go with a folding knife or a fixed blade, but it needs to be below the $100 mark - well below, if possible. If anyone could recommend me a folder and a fixed blade, it would be a great help so I can choose. One of my favs so far has been the UWK from Cold Steel. I like the styling and it seems serviceable, but I'm worried about the 4116 stainless steel. Coming from the sword world, I'm used to the sentiment that stainless=bad, high carbon steel like 1060 or 1080=good. Any help for a knife newbie? Thanks

Welcome to BladeForums!

I don't think it is the products as much as the "advertising" and other miscellaneous antics of the owner.

It seems to me that CS gives pretty reasonable value for the dollar, though I think their San Mai steel is overpriced.

You should be able to do a search for comments on 4116 steel.
Click the search link
click the "advanced search" link on the popup
enter "4116" without the quotes
click "search now"
enjoy!

You can also look through the General Discussion forum manually and find any number of CS threads.
