Here is HI owner, Kami "Pala" Sherpa in his playpen at Anamnagar, Nepal. Here he exercises his rights as senior member of the household. This entitles him to watch anything he pleases on the TV (and he can make some of the worst choices you can imagine!) or to listen to Sherpa music (everybody hates it) if he so desires. At home this is where he hangs out, close to TV and radio, on the couch so he can sleep or lounge. Hell of a deal.
We talked to him a day or two back and Pala sends his regards to all his old pals here and says hi to any newcomers who do not know him. Said to give special regards to those who went to the effort of coming to visit him here in Reno -- Rusty, John Powell, Jim March, Lance Strong, the group from Miami and the knifemaker and family from Sacramento whose name I have forgotten. Did I forget anybody?
Here is the news according to Pala. The second floor of BirGorkha is complete and some kamis are living there. Sarkis have a room for making scabbards and doing other work. It is monsoon and everything is wet and sticky -- metal likes to rust, leather will mold if you are not careful with it. Pala says he works every day (don't believe it) and is solving every problem ( don't believe that, either.)
Gelbu and the kamis are spending too much money buying equipment, Pala says. They bought something Pala believes is a belt sander but he is not sure of the name. Gelbu mentioned he had bought "a little more equipment." We will find out sooner or later.
Two or three new full time kamis have been hired. Prakash has been fired -- too much woman trouble and he just wouldn't show up for work. (When you have two or three wives how can you?)
When I was in the hospital the kamis refused to work and BirGorkha was dark. The kamis told Pala they were better served to go to the mandir and pray for me, that if I croaked there would be nobody to sell the khukuris they make, and everybody would be starving again. Pala did his own share of puja, too. (They all should have known I was too mean to let something like a little heart sputter kill me! ) But, whatever they did worked and I am grateful to them for their kind consideration. As I have often said, it is a love-hate relationship.
Pala is hoping to return here for a visit and to get some stuff done this fall or winter -- no guarantees.
To all he said make sure and give his warmest NAMASTE!
I have done all that he asked.
