Ok, I got a lot of great input on inexpensive custom slippes from you guys, but it turns out that (a) I'm cheaper than most of you, and (b) a custom involves a long wait, and I like my gratification a little more instant.

So, I have been looking around ebay quite a bit for production deals. At first I was excited about Queen & Schatt & Morgan but then there are all these QC complaints. It seems like the Fightin Bull line is well made, but mostly uses 420HC steel, and also I prefer jigged brown bone which Carson doesn't seem to use much. The old Case knives are expensive and I hear grumbling about the newer ones. I see a lot of deals on Weidmannsheil and Bulldog, but I don't hear much about them here. Who has intel on the good, reliable, usable production models? Something that gives the owner a little pride & joy in the workmanship, without having to send it back 4 times to get a flaw-free knife?

I own a couple Queen knives and a S/M and mine have great fit and finish. If you buy your knife new from a internet seller (AG Russell.com, cumberlandknifeworks.com etc...) you might want to ask them to check the knife first to see if its ok.

Unless you are extremely anal, if you want a well-made user, Case or Queen or even a Schrade will be fine. If you have pet peeves about things like walk and talk, ask your vendor to check it first. Blade rub you're gonna be SOL on, as I've seen it on all of em.

I can't say I've seen blade rub on all of them, my experience has been about 25%.

I think you will make out fine with Queen or S&M.

I'm personally a big fan of Winchesters from the 80's early 90's, which were manufactured by Queen for Bluegrass Cutlery. My experience on them has been very good with all I've purchased but one being top notch production pieces. The one I didn't think was up to par had a soft spring and a little more wiggle than I like, but that's out of 15 or more...

Well, most of these guys out there make a decent knife. Boker, Queen, schatt and morgan (same as queen), etc. etc. etc. The bulldog knives of today are pretty, but do not come very sharp, they are more for "looking at" than the original bulldog knives. Some of this is all relative. Any production knife today stands a chance of not being perfect, its jsut a fact. I try to be careful of buying cutlery off of ebay and try to buy from somewhere, or someone, more "reputable". That way if you have any problems you can get it taken care of.

The moore maker knives are really nice. I have 4 of them and have been pleased with them, but they are a little more than some. I have one of these and have been quite happy with it:

I almost bought that model Moore Maker, then I was offered a good deal on a Boker jigged red pickbone stockman model 7474JRBI. ;)

I have been very pleased with cumberlandknifeworks. Give him (Bill) a call and talk with him about what you are looking for and what you want to avoid. He told me he personally inspects each knife in his inventory and returns any that do not meet his standards.

This week I got a Queen CSB Whittler from him and it is excellent in every way.

well, if you can get one of the boker stockmans in decent shape, for a good price they are worth it ;)
