Rusty's soup:
Does it cure hangovers? I wouldn't know anymore. (And I'm not about to start finding out again.) But it's pretty damned good, and the others that tried it agree. From my somewhat extensive experience with hangovers, I'd guess that this recipe would be a good one: grease (good), protein (good), vitamin C from the onions (good), various nutrients from the sour cream (good), and some say that sauerkraut has a cleansing effect on the system. (Also good.) I'm an instinctive eater when hung over; however, I have a feeling that if I were hung over and a pot of this was nearby, I'd instinctively opt for the soup. Nutritionally it makes sense to me.
For the record, I used 1.5 pounds of bacon ends instead of bacon (the ends are infinitely better in a soup, if you can find them) and two large WA onions are probably not what Rusty had in mind, seeing as how if mine were any larger they'd be considered weapons. I also added four cloves of garlic but it can hardly be tasted over the kraut and the bacon. Next time I'll kick it up to eight. I like garlic.
I saw flour mentioned but now how much, so I tossed in something between 1-2 tablespoons. It worked fine. It might even work better if one fried it first in the bacon grease but I wasn't in the mood to experiment too much.
This one gets a Satori Thumb Up. I'll try Yvsa's chile next week.
