I am going to post a few observations on the HI SABER that I purchsed as a daily special a while back.

It was the one with the dragon carvings on either side.

When I saw the box leaning against my door....well you al know what it's like.

MOstly you try to keep your pocket knife from cutting too deeply and not cutting what's inside . Only you are a bit shaky...that is if you are anything like me....still getting excited over recieving a new blade.

When I finally stripped off the newspaper, that revealed the carved dragons, I was completely satisfied with the buy. They are really striking, the wood...(help me with the spelling here) Saatsial? nah that's not right...it is much darker than some of the handles I have seen...more like a dark Rosewood with some lighter streaks.

When I removed the sword from the sheath...I realized many things. But the most important was when I struck the pommel frimly with the heel of my palm.

I was rewarded with a deep hum that reverberated like a low rolling drum.

BOMMMMMMMMMM.

BOMMMMMMMMMM.

BOMMMMMMMMMM.

There were no pops or pings that might tell me something was not quite right.

It is a solid, useable tool, not a touristy wallhanger.

Like we all didn't already know that.

More soon.

I'm looking forward to your review, Shane. Also, it's really good to have you back posting. It's always nice when someone who leaves rejoins the community:)

I'm going to go ahead and pop this thread over to the regular HI board if you don't mind. It looks like it'll have plenty to do with an HI product:D

Just don't be too glowing with the review. I've been jonesing for a new sword, but the funds don't allow at the moment:D

I knew if I sort of made a goof on posting...somebody would nudge me in the right direction.

As far as giving a glowing review...I want to preface this look at HI's work.

The standards that this company is able to works to is different than say...what the current custom or production market in this country expects.

The blades that come from HI are solid, practical tools made by people who know what that tool is supposed to do. They are not influenced by the Internet or the Mall...or what is the Hottest trend.

They do not work to the machine tolerances of caliper and micrometer.

They work with hand and eye and heart.

By the modern industry standard, they work in a primitive environment with rudimentary tools.

Even though this is true, they are able to produce BEAUTIFUL work.

Anybody who has seen or owned the KOTHIMODA will agree.

I WISH I could do work like that...and it does inspire me to try harded...and befuddled me when my modern machinery will not work to their standard.

Their tradition is centuries old. We are priviledged to be able to take part in their world even if it is in the peripheral as a customer.

Now, today, as the country of Nepal is being consumed by the Chinese behemoth....slowly, inexorably these good people, and their craft are being threatened with extinction.

Being a customner, whenever I can, allows me to help...in some small way...these good craftsman to make it throuhg one more day. They can practice this art form at its highest level...instead of having to turn to a more mundane way to earn their livelihood.

It is odd, that even as we who hold them aloft and marvel...their own countrmen see them as one of the lowest castes.

All I can say is BUY HI!

More about the SABER next time.

Hi Shane, I look forward to your full review and hope there are pictures. :) Some people look at an HI Khukuri and see the flaws or that it's not made with CNC and water jet or lazer and computers. Others see the beauty in form and funtion. A new khukuri is beautiful to me but a used one that is still being used and treated well is even better.
