Hi Sal:

I am relatively new to Spydercos but I own already more than 25 :D . Therefore I would like to share my concerns.

Blade length:

A growing number of States (i.e. MI & IL) set the maximum blade lengths at 3”. And some municipalities (i.e. Chicago) set the maximum blade lengths at 2.5”. I am sorry to say that this trend for 3” and 2.5” blades is growing. Therefore it is frustrating to read about the new “Mini-Manix” with a blade length of 3 1/8" (80mm).

Why can the new “Mini-Manix” not have a blade of 3”?

The same holds true for the excellent Centofante III and Native. Please make an effort to design the new knives with 3” blades and not 3 1/8”.

Handle:

A lot of consumers have big chubby fingers. Please keep them in mind when you design the handles, especially for the short blade knives.

Clips: Tip up / Tip down:

Please design the new knives with predrilled holes so the consumer can carry “Tip up” or “Tip down”. Right hand or left hand.

Thank you for reading this.

I trust that some of my concerns will be addressed in future designs.

Please note that the Dodo and Yojimbo are my favorite Spydercos. :)
Regards,
FRIZ

You can have your blade ground down to a legal length by a custom maker, it's pretty common.

As for the moveable clips, some people don't like having a "swiss cheesed" knife. I'm with you on that one though, being a lefty. Spyderco does have many models, and there are a good number of companies that make knives on the same level as them. If you like a knife but not it's clip, you can probably find a similar model somewhere else with the clip you like. Not always though, as with the Dodo (also one of my favorites).

Hi Friz,

Perhaps for many, designing a knife to a certain size is simple. For us, the situation is complicated by ergo requirements, room for locks, etc.

On the ParaMilitary, I couldn;t get it any smaller and still keep the ergos. You wouldn't think 1/4" could make much difference, but it does. 3" blade was the original goal.

As mentioned, it is always easy to make a blade shorter.

Eric tried to keep the Manix "80mm" under 3", but couldn't and still keep the choil.

For some designs it's easier. It depends on the design goals.

On the clip location, we're moving more towards 4 way clips. Many say the "swiss cheese look" is ugly, but ugly is a term we've come to accept, so what can it be with "swiss cheese holes"? ugly-ugly?

You'll see more 4 ways in the future.

On the Centofante 3, Frank, like most custom makers, likes to fit as much blade into the handle as is possible. I try not to affect collaboration designs unless I feel there is a safety issue, or an ergo issue.

Frank's design also has the sharp edge go all the way to the handle. Something that I don't do in my designs, but I can respect his reasoning, even if I think another way.

On the handle, I have thick fingers so I have to pay attention. ;)

I heartily concur. Spydercos were my first EDC's with clips. I think, at first, all Spydies were tip down and I got very used to it. For a long time I though I could adjust to tip up folders but have finally been cured of buying them any more. So, I do not even consider many, otherwise appealing models.

It's odd because I easily adapt to any new lock design; But tip up carry never ceases to feel unnatural.

P.S. Ugly turns to beautiful when function and quality are paramount. That's one reason I love Spydies.

Great info on the clip locations. Despite the 'swiss cheese' look, of no consequence to me, I like and prefer being able to move the clip for differing types of carry. I've loved that feature on the one Spyderco I've gotten with extra holes.

Yeah, it's one of my favorite features on my Chinook II. :D
