Some of you may recall me mentioning a young man we financed for his first semester of college. Well, here he is.

This is Ramasor, Sgt. Karka's oldest son, and a delightful boy he is. He came to Pala's deera to personally thank me for helping him get though his first semester of college His father, Sgt. Karka, has been severely thwarted in his career in the Nepal Army due to lack of education and it is a loss for everybody. Sgt. Karka would have easily risen to the rank of Col. had he been better educated. Both Sgt. Karka and his son know the value of education. I promised Ramasor we would continue to assist him with his education. His gratitude was embarrassing considering that the 10,000 rupia we gave him for school expense amounts to about $150 USD. This along with some old college books Gelbu gave him did the trick. We will get this boy educated one way or the other.

As usual, Uncle Bill is with beer and cigarette in hand. You can see Gelbu in the background in a bedroom wandering around doing something. That bedroom is his, serves as his office and also is the home of his ancient computer.

Great story, Uncle Bill! Are there any plans to creat a self-sustaining scholarship fund that would not only benefit Ramasor, but other worthy recipients?

The scholarship fund would be preferable to the micro-loan business project for safety reasons. It is a definite possibility if there are any generous forumites looking for a way to build some plus karma.

Many kids have to drop out of school at a very young age or never attend school at all due to lack of funds. This scholarship would work not just for college kids but would give some kids a chance at the first grade and would give them the opportunity to learn to read and write. Nepal is still only 20 percent literate.

The payback of Ramasor is when he reaches a position in life where he is able to help somebody he must do the same for them as was done for him.

Good idea with the requirement that anyone so blessed with the scholarship is required to do the same for someone else.

As a point, I will start adding $10.00 to each khukuri I purchase for the scholarship fund and would encourage other patrons of Himalayan Imports to do the same.

Many thanks, Harry. We will set any money aside that comes in for the scholarship fund and will use it for helping out poor kids. We will do our best to administer this money in a manner that does the most good for the most kids.

I'm not sure if grade school kids will ever be able to help anybody but college level students like Ramasor will surely be able to and I have faith they will not forget their obligation.

I applaud this. What a nice thing to do.

Unfortunately, my knive funds have dried up since my 1st daughter started college this last year. Another will, hopefully, go to college year after next. Once they finish college I will actively support this kind of thing. In the meantime, I wish their college expenses were so affordable.

Yes, Bob, $150 per semester seems a bargain, doesn't it!

When I see the plight of Sgt. Karka my heart aches. Here is a man who is extremely intelligent, hard working, ambitious, good character, and he went into the Nepal Army as a boy not being able to read and write. How that hurt him! And he knows from sad experience what it is like to be uneducated and hopes and tries desperately to do better for his children. My own grandfather was in much the same boat and never stopped harping about the value of a decent education.

Our scholarship fund may not be much but it is certainly better than nothing.

Thank you, Steven. I figure once basics and family are taken care of, then it is time to do some good deeds. While one cannot attempt to fix all the world's problems, every little bit helps make it better for someone.
