I posted that question in the general forum and its getting some good response. What I am proposing is a general sheath and associated items forum. It seems that questions and insights about sheaths are getting lost in the traffic around here and end up in the sheath forums at other sites. I think, and a lot of others do, that we need a separate forum for sheathmakers, those curious about sheathmaking, and those wanting to have things made for them or just curious how they're sheath is made and how to repair or replace it.

I am a full time leathersmith and able to monitor the forum rather efficently all through the day, with the aid of another I think we could have a great thing going! What ya say Spark? Give us a chance and we'll do ya proud eh? C'mon you know you wanna do it! :D Pleeeeeese! :)

Tis a great idea, Dwayne.

Kevin - perhaps a grouping of this new subforum with the new ShopTalk Area that was discussed?

I think thats a great Idea (but Im a nobody :( Jk)... other good mods for it would be Lifter4him and Gary Grayley.

The main issue is sustainable traffic. Look at the Multitool forum - how much traffic does it get?

if it was a subforum of the ShopTalk area it would get good traffic (and it would not be lonely either...;))

Spark, I didn't think that was a good idea because it's to limited.

A Leathersmith Forum could include types of leather, sheaths, belts, holsters, wallets, vests, boots, etc.; making, repair and new products.

I think all the knifemakers and a lot of other members are interested in sheathmaking. That doesn't mean they'll all post, but I think there'll be enough people posting to make a forum viable. I suggest discussing kydex and leather in the same forum; splitting them would make them both too small.

Plus you dont have to keep it limited to Leathersmith..

Call it Leathersmith and Sheath Making...

this way you can include Kydex in the talks too.

I agree, it needs to cover a wide range of sheathmaking: leather, kydex, nylon, even wood sheaths are very cool. I think a sheath making in general would create the attention needed for a good start. I understand the concern because of the multi tool thing, but sheaths, scabbards, knife cases, tool pouches, accessory pouches, those wonderful wooden scabbards that contain khukri's and swords and other ethnic bladeware is a much wider spectrum of interest. Every knife needs a carry mode, be it a fixed blade (a given ;)) a large folder can benifit from a belt case,

Did I miss anything?

I'm also interested in such a forum, and it would have my support.

Spark, the multi tool forum seems to get some traffic day to day, and there are plenty of threads there now. Maybe the hit count isn't very high right now, but I'm willing to bet that it will increase as more of the new multi tools become available.

A sheathmaker's forum would generate a fair amount of traffic IMHO, mainly because of all the questions I see posted in general, and the shop talk forum. This would also give guys like Leatherman, Gary Grayley, Lifter, and Eric (on Scene) a venue for them to help us aspiring sheathmakers out in our sheathmaking, as well as making those gentlemen more visible to our community. Those individuals would also make great moderators for the forum.

I vote yes... and agree with what Code 3 stated - Those wishing to sell oughta buy the appropriate membership. However, I like the idea of that forum for discussion and sharing of "trade secrets" - how to make and care for sheaths of different materials, as well as tips on where to purchase materials. I'll post this over in the service forum, to let Spark know that others like this idea. I'm not yet a paid member ($ is very tight, these days), but hope to be in the relatively near future. A paid member, that is, not one with very few dollars...

Ok, so I posted over here... I agree that this forum would fit well under the Shoptalk directory, as sheath making is certainly part of a knife shop's production.

Hey Guys...

Thanks for the mention C3....

Yes I would be much interested in a Sheathmaking forum here at BF.com...

I'm active at all of the sheathmaking forums CKD,KF,USN and would love to have the same here at home. This is the first place I go in the morning, and the last place before I go to bed..

I will actively partake, and have contributed to any relative discussion in Shoptalk...It's only natural as far as I'm concerned..

Cougar, what the hell is up with that fish? I just gotta know.

On April Fool's Day I thought it would be a good (though obscure) joke to have a fish stuck to my back, so to speak. It's customary in France and Quebec to cut out a paper fish and stick it to someone's back with tape on April 1st. I'm not French or Quebecois but I learned the custom in my 7th grade French class and I thought it was fun.... So I appended that fish to all my posts on April 1st this year. Then, after April Fool's Day was over I decided I like that fish. It's a contemplative fish ... it goes well with thoughtful posts ... kind of like a contemplative emoticon. So since then I've been attaching the fish to some posts, and a couple of pirate flags to some posts, posts that have a different mood, and some posts don't get anything.

BTW I found the fish with Google Image Search -- I don't know who drew it.

Personally, I think a sheath making forum is a great idea. It is something I would be very interested in learning more about.

I would also participate, like i said in the other tread i make both kydex and leather sheaths and i'd be willing pay a few extra buck for the designation of sheath maker!

I have some answer and lots of questions so i would love to have a sheath making forum. Just let me know what i need to do to help make it happen and i'll do what i can!

Thanks
