So, anyone think it's possible? I would love to see some khuk quality spear heads, if not an entire spear. Even if I have to custom order, I don't care, that would be quite the amazingness. What do you guys think? Even possible?

Dan Klug of White Hart Forge does good work on spearheads. But I don't think he could hold a candle to Sher.
A hand forged spearhead would be the absolute best on a pig hunt!

knowing how the kamis work, it would of course be 18" long (minus the shaft) and weigh 2 lb. :)

i'd like a nice leaf shaped one about 8-12" blade, central stiffening ridge both sides and a 1.25" dia. socket for the shaft.
samples:

here's one i've had for years (not HI tho ;) )

socket is only 3/4" dia, could be a bit larger dia socket. 12" blade, section near 3" socket is 1/2" sq.
central ridge distal tapers to point, blade 1 5/8" max width.

could be fancier:

here's a fullered and pierced bronze age spearhead. (repro)

as cast, 8" LOA. needs a bit of reaming out of the socket, and edge grinding to reduce the weight. this one does weigh 2 lb. :D

could also be much simpler: one from a tribe in eastern india.

flat steel blade, tail piece.

which brings up the next comment: a spear should be accompanied with a corresponding tail piece to balance the head and provide a convenient bit to stick in the ground when needed.

You can imagine the kami's reaction when the order comes in.... "Bura, let me get this straight," says Sher. "They've got aircraft carriers... they've got F-18s... I've seen their movies and every single American has about 90 guns. They want us to make spear heads? Truly, the stock market is coming apart."

As much as I'd love to see some flying mini Khuks attached to small pieces of wood flying through the air, I think that it'd be too unfair to our enemies to make Khukris ranged. So I'll rest satisfied with the great idea of a spear.

I think I'd like a naginata blade, it brings out the inner girl in me.

arms and armor of Minnesota sells great, historically accurate items.

give them a look.

I think the kamis take on the spearhead would be neat to see. Obviously, you would end up with more of a thrusting weapon than a throwing one as it would probably be over-built:D

I've been using an old Cold Steel Bushman as a beater camp knife for years. What I like about it is that once attached to a handy walking staff it becomes a very formidable spear/pokin' stick. I think I paid $13 for it back in 2001. It's proved itself so many times over that I made a new pair of pants for it. Probably 20 bucks in material and man hours for a cheapie beater:D

I'd imagine it to be something like Cold Steel's boar spear. Heavy enough to be a spear's equivalent to armor piercing (gotta be able to punch through a rhino or a car door, or of course a rhino sitting in a car) and able to slash with equal viciousness. I guess I could throw something that heavy if necessary (like picking off a deer munching on my mom's poor flower bed), but its main task would be as a polearm.
Admittedly I have no use for a polearm, but then again I don't need more than 1 khukri (I have 4) or EDC (I carry two, with probably three or four more floating around).
What was I saying... Oh yes, the spear. I envision something on the spear-y side of a naginata.

How bout an 18 inch Kobra or Siru blade on a six foot stick? Sounds pretty cool to me. Not much use for thrusting though.

It has been tried and found wanting. See below, Pattern 1856 (I think) sword bayonet for the 1853 Enfield rifled musket, sold to both sides in the American Civil War, later adapted for the Snider Enfield the Martini Henry: 22.75" blade, 28" overall. Burton said it was worthless both as sword and bayonet.

The Trisul looks more suitable for adaptation. You could send the kamis a Cold Steel Bushman and ask them to make a Trisul with a handle like that.

That's actually not a bad idea. That would both revisit the Bushman while still denying Lynn Thompson any glory. A win-win.

Did someone say Trisul? My ears always perk up when I hear that magical word:) I'm not much on knives that are generally only for "de-animation", but man do i love the Trisul:) Yangdu was kind enough to special order me a 14" one some time back. I treasure it.

I honestly think that a tough hollow handle with a trisulish blade and integrated guard would be very cool as a knife and a spear.

If there is enough interest in it, I'll be happy to part with my old bushman to send to the kamis for inspiration:thumbup:
