Hi,

After reading your praises on HI i also just recieved my first HI kukri. It is very nice and better than i expected but i thought they all had HI stamped on the blade. My 16.5in chiriwa has L.B and an upside down half moon symbol stamp on it. Is that the sig of the bloke who made it??

cheers

BC,

It is usually marked HI in the local language at the mid blade. The initials near the bottom belong to the kami who made the knife.

Your khukuri was made by Bura. Everyone has their own favorite kami (bloke) and many prefer Bura's work.

I think ! is underrated.

To be correct, the Nepali "Hee Eee" equivalent of HI are in Devanagari script. Which, being the same alphabet as used by Sanskrit, are even weirder than Greek.

As was mentioned above, the half-moon and L.B. stand for Lal Bahadur, AKA Bura ( old man ) and shop foreman for Bir Gorkha ( Brave Gorkha ). The Royal kami. And day in and day out, about the best.

He, of course, has bad days. Others at times occassionally have very good days and surpass Bura's usual work. That's my opinion. Others like different kamis better.
