Hello all

I'd first like to say I've tried using the search function but I think the recent crash has messed it up. It is just locking up my computer (over and over again)

So here's my HI newbie question, how does one sharpen an HI Katana (or Tarwar)?

From what I've read, these swords are meant to be used and used a lot. So how would one sharpen or refresh the edge if needed? Or am I wrong in assuming they would need to be sharpened?

I sharpen my knives, but a sword is more than a long knife.

Thanks for looking and any information is appreciated :D

Best regards,

I'm a coarse craftsman...I'd whip it up on my Delta grinder ($89 on sale at Lowe's), strop it to finish and call it good.

Echo what Nasty said. A good convex edge would be in order (especially the Tarwar). However, the swords aren't really meant to be used like the khukuris. What all do you plan on using them for?

Thx Nasty & Big Bob for your replies

I've recently been bitten by the sword bug and want to practice cutting. Right now I've got a boken and will be enrolling in a local sword class. So the main object of my aggression will be mats and small saplings (and Zombies, I mean swords don't run out of bullets :D ).

Again stupid question, what kind of edge do the Katana and Tarwar come with? Would it be difficult to convex edge them?

As I understand it, most of HI's blades come with a convex edge that may or may not need a little retouching. I.e., the geometry is already there, you just need to bring it to the level of sharpness that your task requires. That has certainly been the case with all the khuks I have received, but I don't know about the swords. You would have to talk so some of the members here who have aquired a few. DannyinJapan might be a good place to start.

Speaking of sharpening convex edges. I've been thinking about a soft platen for a 1" belt sander to sharpen convex edges. I doubt that mouse-pad would be durable enough, but it might work for a quick test. I'm sure that there is high temperature, slick surfaced foam stuff out there somewhere that would work. Oh, BTW, my machine runs very slow so I doubt if it would just rip the foam off. Any ideas?

I just found this neat PDF from Bark River that goes into more detail: BRK linky.

I just go at my swords with a DMT Daifold and use the same angle as my knives....seems to work fine.
