I'm thinking about picking up a short sword. I don't have any real reason to pick an HI sword over any other, maybe it's just because I've seen their Sweet Deal posts and know I could get a long kukri/short sword for $300 or less.

What do you guys think of the HI swords? Are they decent quality?

My purpose in buying a short sword is for combat. After reading about the Gladius a little I think I would like to use it to stab. Khukris are chopping blades. HI makes stabby blades too, though.

If an HI sword is good enough for combat then I think I might buy one. Please advise.

HI's swords are intended to be fully functional and are considered excellent value for the money. Some people are put off by their relative lack of historical accuracy though.

Big Bob is right on. HI engineers (and sometimes over-engineers) their swords to be as fully functional as possible. While I wouldn't purposely chop wood with them (and some of them can handle it it), they are more than capable for standing up to the rigors of combat.

I recently took my HI manjushree (much like a Roman Gladius) to a series of pool noodles and cardboard. Sliced, chopped, and stabbed without any problems.

However, as Bob said, if you want something that is "accurate" historically, then HI isn't for you. If you want a sword that can take a beating and NOT break the bank, HI is a great value.

I've owned 3 or 4 HI swords (in addition to dozens of khuks) over the years. All of them have been put through the wringer, and none of them have even thought about failing.
