Here's a couple of Schrades I picked up cheap. The little one, the SS1 (Simon) is a bargain, a fun little friendly hi-tech type folder, hangs neatly on a belt loop or anything else. Retails most places at about $15.00, cheaper on the net. Worth every penny of it. Sharp out of the box, easy to make shaving sharp. A very positive lockup that I trust. Made in the good old USA, and of Schrade+ steel, which I for one am very content with. I give these away to friends, mostly non-knife people, who love them.

I'm also showing a 'Badger', SX4B. Hard to even write about this one, here in my favorite knife brand forum. Made in China. 'Stainless Steel', period. Typical inexpensive black finished 'tactical'-look folder, linerless, with a liner-lock. Those black blades are important to us guys who have to take out sentries. No thumb stud, the 'Spyderco'-inspired hole in the blade. Retails for $15.00 at WallyWorld. Pocket clip, of course, and some textured TPR inserts on the handle. Frankly, the term used in the rest of BladeForums for this knife would be 'POS'. I would never trust the liner lock not to fail on me. For the same price, Wally World was offering a couple different OTs.

Just some early Saturday morning ramblings.. Not trying to slam our favorite knife company, I do understand the need to hit every price -point and market.

Have a great weekend, all.

Thanks for the pictures this early AM. ;)

Did they have any SQ877s.....Cable Locks? I have never seen one anywhere.
I know it was mentioned in another thread here, but I was wondering if you or anyone else had handled one. If so, what's the verdict?

Thanks,

Bill

Bill, that 'Cable Lock' is the one I purposely set out to buy. Could not find one locally.

I have given the SS1's to my boys whom have them on their keychains and they love em. They have taken a beaten and are still tickin or is that another old product? Can't comment on the Badgers except they are ugly but I have faith in Phil. I've heard from 1 person that the cable lock was a nice piece. I have not seen one.
Hope all is well out there in Schrade land.

Larry

P.S. I have just gotten a LB4 which like Haddock was thought to be extinct.
When I clean it up I'll post a picture.

Cheeeeez Larry.......

It was of course.....Takes a "Lickin'"......

I think maybe it was for a manufacturer of ping pong equipment?

Off to look for a Cable Lock....With my friend Monty Python. :D

Hope our new friend at Schrade marketing noticed that, Phil. By my count, on the Schrade website, there are now 112 models of Schrade knife. Your post this morning is the first I've seen in a long time to refer to any of them besides the 16 OTs and 8 UHs.

I'm willing to believe there's a place for things like the Simon (is it really a knife?) and the Badger. It's a big world. But I would bet that CRKT and China will eat Schrade's lunch if they try to slug it out on those grounds. A company can't be all things to all people. On the Schrade website you will find 28 different lines of knives, with from 1 to 16 models each. So I ask you, what is a Schrade?

A few moons ago, in a different life, I had a job booming Oldsmobiles. I called the editor of a popular car mag and asked him what he thought a Cutlass was. It resulted (much to my chagrin) in a column in which he said that Oldsmobile had lost its way, Cutlass didn't mean anything anymore when every other Oldsmobile had Cutlass in the name, and the end was near. Guess what? He was right. (I know I don't have to tell you this, Phil, since you live in Lansing, but there may be others looking on.)

EARTH TO SCHRADE: DON'T FALL INTO THE LINE EXTENSION TRAP. DON'T TRY TO BE ALL THINGS TO ALL PEOPLE.

Just my humble opinion.

Oh yeah, do I ever know what you mean about Oldsmobile, Mike. I had two Cutlesses (damn, I loved that '64 convertable with the 330 ci 'rocket' engine).
Olds, MotorWheel, FisherBody... hometown brands now gone. Gone like the hometown sense of pride, loyalty and familiarity that made we locals want to buy a product made by our friends and relatives. I imagine Steve and our LT, living as close to Schrade as they do, understand this concept perfectly.

I grew up in Saugerties NY. The things I remember the most are going to Lachmanns bakery and getting crumbcake in the AM from Mrs. Lachmann herself, then going down the street to Krauses candy store (the chocolates were Mrs. Kraus' own recipe). There were numerous farms all around where you could buy fresh meat, and vegetables. Around my house were several lumber mills where we would get wood. on and on.

Basically 90% of what we needed we got from people in our town. Try that now however and it's a very different story.

Given my semi-akward state as an employee here I can't rant too much. But read between the lines and I think you'll see where I stand on the demise of the small family shops.

I could really go for some Krauses right now. ;-)

I love the Simon.
That thing never ever ever dies. A friend of mine works in the shipping dept. for another company, and used nothing but a simon for cutting boxes, tape and such for over a year. 8 hours a day, 5 days a week cutting. Eventually ALL the blacking on the blade came off, and he had resharpen it several times, but it just kept going.

He only got rid of it when a forklift ran it over and bent it horribly.
Just thought I would share that little story for you.

The Simon's remind me of George Schrade's original folding wire knives with just a little updating in shape and material. They could be something he would have done.

Steve: Hope you offered to get your friend another ;)

Happy Monday all you folks.

Of course. Brought the old one in to show the repairs department as a joke. You should have seen the strange looks I was getting...

The Badger I looked at was made in Ireland.

Might make a as a beater/sacrificial knife. Too bad, too. If the liner was thicker, and the blade was a bit beefier, it looks like it wouldn't be too bad of a knife (even though it looks like someone tried to make a cheap Schrade version of a Spyderco).

Schrade just doesn't quite seem to click when they step too far outside the bounds of traditional knives...

Well folks, still no joy for me as far as finding the Cable Lock.....I'm 0 for 4 at brick and mortar places that carry knives here in Phoenix. :(

Any one else find/handle/buy one?

Bill

0 for 5.....my wife just checked for me while at Ace Hardware.

I'm beginning to think Don Luis will see one in Mexico before I see one.

Bill

Yes, the badgers were made in ireland for awile. We recently closed our ireland facility.
I'm not sure where we are producing them now. I'll have to check.

There´s a high cool factor in the Simon as well as in other modern Schrades, haven´t seen any in Mexico though, we usually only get the occasional OT and UH.

I too see Schrade better as a traditional maker, yet the Cable Lock seems good, nice and original, reminds me of cable gate carabiners which actually work very well, effective, strong and light, seems to me that this idea along with the rotating clip in the Switch-it shows how innovative Schrade is, now that I think of it, a Cable lock with rotating clip would be nice.

Is the Simon blade ground symmetric or is it like a one sided or chisel grind ?. I can see this is as handy to carry around though it doesn´t seem like it would be comfortable in the hand.

I have one of the Ireland made stockmans (AP26), it´s an OK knife for the price, not bad steel, thin blades, cheap but strong molded scales, no bolsters, good walk and talk. Maybe you could make them in Mexico now, that way I might be able to get them at a better price.

OK, that is NOT a Schrade, of course. I bought this one at the local Knife store (yeah, I could have gotten it cheaper on the web, but how many of you have a really nice knife shop in your town?).

It's like the Simon, but doesn't have the neat-o snap on clip. Has a pocket clip instead. May make a good money clip. I gave this one to my Dad at fathers day, along with a nice jacket. He's old and gets cold easy. And he loves sharp stuff.

But honestly, I like the little Schrade better. Half the price as well.

Good question that GRMike asks... "is it even a knife?" Naw, but it is a nice little cutter.

Don Luis, it's only sharpened on one side. Made of Schrade+ steel, in the USA. And Luis... I can't send you an email, could you please send me one?

Phil

I´ve seen that little crkt and I have a similar one made in Taiwan, with a round hole in the handle to double as a cigar cutter, can´t say I like it much, never liked chisel grinds, not even in my Japanese kitchen knives, I agree the Schrade seems better with the snap-on thing and the edge cover, if I had one I would probably reprofile it to a symmetric edge.

Phil, email sent.

Luis
