Mamav got my brain to churning and now I am interested in drawing up a throwing khukuri.
Yall want to play ?

We need a size, shape and handle design, plus materials and weight.

I was thinking one of those aluminum handles would work well.
(if it is welded on and really tough)

I bet the AK would sink into wood like a drill.

Danny,

I have thrown 12, 15 and 18” AKs plus a BAS and 18” GS. The 15 and 18” AKs plus the BAS worked the best.

So, 15" AK.
What kind of handle should we put on it ?

Pointed (skull crusher) chiruwa. Cord wrapped. Nothing to come apart.

Sounds like a neat plan, Danny:)
I kinda like the cord-wrapped idea. or maybe leather slabs like they put on throwing knives. Shouldn't it come with titanium-lined shin guards?:D

several ideas above
my first thought was chiruwa sirupati
or other narrow style
with wrapped grip
no slabs

spring temper
rebated edge
.

I dunno. Rocks are fer throwin, khuks r 4 holdin. Does anyone have a specific use for throwing a khuk, other than recreation? Just curious.

If you did throw a 2lb 18" AK, I think the way it landed is insconsequential, as long as it hit its target.

If we designed a thrower, I'd do the leather/cord over chirwah, thick edge bevel, no tempering whatsoever (i.e. leave it all mild steel for shock absorbtion), no bolster, no buttcap, simple flat leather sheath with no by-knives, no blade polish or finishing work.

We're asking them to basically make a cut down Villager...do we want that?

THe kamis must think we're nuts. We ask for the strangest things! First we want fancy, polished pieces, then we want villager style, now we want -- what? throwing style?

Personally, I prefer to throw axes. just replace handles as necessary.

Keith

I think a bungee cord should be attached if we're going to be REAL tough guys. :D

If you must, chiruwa, tang is full thickness, no bolster or pommel, and riveted leather slab handles.

The handles would likely soon need to be re-riveted--from what I've seen they depend more on the laha than fitting the rivets to the holes in the tang. I doubt you'd get a decent wrapping job from them.

And it would toally mangle your hand if used for chopping.

Yes, they would think we were crazy and want them to make useless crap. Dunno if that is a good message to send.

First off let me say I am not an advocate of throwing a weapon in a combat situation. You lose control of your weapon & now it's at the enemy's disposal. The only weapons I would consider throwing would be rope dart, chain whip etc. Once thrown you still have control & can retrieve them. Now with that said let me say I enjoy the heck out of throwing sharp pointy objects for recreation & frustration. When Mamav first suggested throwing a khukri I was intrigued. I took a couple of beaters out back & I was amazed! These things are great throwers. Good, deep, penetration. Hmmm thats not what I'm talking about guys :) . They throw more like a hatchet than a knife. IMO obviously chiruwa , no bolster , no handles ,no butt cap, indifferent on the cho. This is for splits & grins folks & please remember a bouncing blade is out of control & can cause serious injuries. Oh yeah, we would have to fine tune the balance ourselves.

well, sometimes you gotta do what you gotta do.
Musashi would have been killed by a sickle and chain fighter from Iga if he hadnt thrown his sword...

I was wondering if a large steel ball for a pommel might not be a useful addition to our fantasy throwing khuk.

Oh fantasy, how bout a ninja death ray? Myths, legends, fantasy, reality sometimes I get confused. :p

Earlier today I saw a spherish pommel that was composed of hexagons (or pentagons) and squares. Think soccer ball. Would that work?

i dunno. you thow something - ANYTHING pointed at a guys face, you have a good 1/2 second+ to do something while he's getting out of the way/flinching. try to make it stick? probably not, but you'll get something out of it.

kinda like shining a flashlight in someones eyes, but with a knife... i dont know what im talking about....

Now yer talkin...at least in a dark situation...one of those "light cannons". Stun the heck out of an adversary with nothing more than high intensity light.

Wonder how they'd forge that?
