HI vs. UniqueThai kukris

Welcome to the Cantina!

Stick around for some blems. You won't be sorry. Well...actually you will... Just throw away your computer after you get the HI khuk and you'll have no problems dealing with HIKV. Unless you live in Reno...:D

Seriously, go for HI. :)

Welcome Chris! :)

Forget the flea market stuff...there is *no* comparison to HI Khuks at all. In any comparison as an actual tool (weapon), HI will blow them away...you get hand forged, high quality, differentially hardened steel at (Uncle Bill, look away) ridiculously low prices. :D

I would pay $8.99 for the pretty stand though... ;)

I wouldn't be able to say until I used the thing, but my guess would be that its greatest ability would be sitting around and looking impressive. I don't know which stainless steel was used in the construction, but I'm willing to bet (considering how important steel types have become to most people who are willing to pay hundreds of dollars for knives) that they'd name it if it was something to brag about. The only stainless steel I've ever used that can really stand up to heavy/impact use is INFI, and I guarantee that they'd mention it of that was what they were using.

In comparison--between the current material and the archives--there are well over 100,000 posts on HI khuks available for reading here, and an unconditional guarantee to furthur back you up, so I think your money will be much more safely spent with Uncle Bill.

But, all of that said, if you really want the other one than that's all that really counts!

As a first impression, just looking at the pictures: if you want a toy, buy one of theirs; if you want a tool, stick around for Uncle Bill's Best Buys (posted often, during the week, usually in the mornings). You'll get a MUCH better bargain for your money.

Wow!

I don't get answers this fast on anandtech - thanks so much. It looks like it will be a sirupati from HI for me unless I can snag a blem in the near future. Appreciate it.

Chris

Make sure you read the ordering sticky on the main page...some folks have been practicing it! :p

Except for the "first one is free" part of it...

Uh, stainless blade, fancy hand eand stand, says :show piece: to me.
Price at 100? Go to Pier 1 Imports and you can get this touristy piece fer 50 i bet. I would not trust that to do any serious work, and its not made for it. How can i tell?

Easy.

A DISPLAY (ie show, no use, just look at) knife comes with a STAND. And it seems the the fancier the stand is, the worse the knife is.

A USER (i.e. amy look good, will take abuse, made of handforged differentially hardened hi0carbon steel) comes with a SHEATH.

Trat yerself to an HI khuk. You can get smart looks and an nice tool knife fer half the cost. Betcha can't buy just one!

I'm not looking to do any heavy chopping.

I'd be leery about using this "khukuri" for anything more than a wall hanging, let alone chopping, even light... I do admit that it is beautiful, as Thai artisans are quite skilled, but as a functional knife, it is virtually useless. Stay tuned in on the forum's very special purchase opportunities; if you're living in the U.S., you can get two very high quality functional works of art for about 50% less than this glorified letter opener.

Start out with a blem, and you'll realize that my advice is right on. Get the real item, and you'll never again consider looking for high quality artisan craftsmanship at the Flea Market... Stick around the forum,; we're out to help you, and steer you in the right direction.

Shadoz, before you look at eBay or other 'Khuk sellers', look
at my post 1st:

http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=287674

The 2nd pic purposely shows the (cross section) difference in blade thickness between an eBay purchased 'Khukuri' and one from Uncle Bill. This will give you an idea as to what you get for just a few bucks more (eBay is 15.5" and 12.9oz while HI villager is 16.5" and 1.5lbs). Another thing, Uncle Bills service is 2nd to none! This is why the real khukuri finatics stick with Uncle Bill and HI. Theyrrrrre Grrrreat!
Hope this helps in your decision.
BTW, welcome to the Looney Ward ;)

I had a tour in Thailand clearing No.9, Some of the Mt. villagers uses the Thai swords/choppers for harvest as well as defence. Damn blade is very sharp and can slice off a banana tree in half easily. They use it on cow beheading ceremony as well. But I think Kruks have different function as compared to swords. May be someone can test a Thai blade. I see this company have some for fairly good price. Did not see Kruks in Thailand. Oops! may be I'm in the wrong forum.
