Im new. Im 20,I Live in Quebec City, CAnada. Ive been reading this forum for some weeks, and since i like blades, i decided to register.

I have no digital camera, but here's my knife so far:

Gerber Gator
Gerber Hersey Hunter w/ leather sheath

I would like to know what do you think about the hersey hunter. ( http://www.knivesplus.com/GB-5981-Gerber.HTML ) (sharpness, steel used, what is best use, is it a good survival knife,ect..) exept i do not have the tactical sheath.

And finally, since i live in QC, my english is not that great.

Thanks. :)

Welcome to BFC. I hope you enjoy your time here very much. As to the Hersey Hunter, I have no experience with it so I'd rather not speculate. Take care, tf. ;)

Welcome to the gang. I hope you end up enjoying BF at least as much as I do.

(Don't worry about your english. You seem to be able to get your point across just fine and that is all that counts here. Trust me it is better than my French anyway. :D)

Welcome aboard! The Harsey folders are pretty good,(could be better if they had plain edges), not a bad user to start out with..Stand by though, as yourlevel of understanding improves, the price of your toys goes waay up. :D

More info, so you might review it better:

Gerber Harsey Hunter (Taiwan steel (i read that is better quality steel.))

and my pocket knife

Gerber Gator (Portland, USA steel)

Should i buy a sharpener ? Or is it sharp enough ? Oil ?

i dont know much about knife, im starting to study steel, (440A-B-C , S30V, D2, ect..) but what i can say is that the harsey hunter is REALLY comfortable in the hand. And the Gator handle, oh my, it just can't slip out of your hand !

tell me what do you think :)

Salut cousin !

My English is limited too, still I survive.

I do not know about your particular knives. But you have to be sure that sharpness is an evolving thing. As you use your knife its steel gets worn like any material, thus goes duller, until the point where you do not feel satisfied anymore with the way it performs. This means you have reached the ultimate limit where sharpening has become compulsory.

There are many ways to sharpen. It is a rich field of learning, and there are enough brilliant people around here to introduce you to the techniques and go deeper into them as your crazy head will understand more and more and your hands wil get used to it.

You can start by reading the FAQs on BF. Do not hesitate going to a knife dealer and ask him to show you how he sharpens. Cooks are also a good source of new techniques.

FYO, I do my sharpening on flat natural (Arkansas and Pyrennées) waterstones.

You will also have to raise a lot your level of expectancy towards knife performance. Knives usually seen DO NOT CUT ! BF peoples' knives do cut. Read around, handle some really well sharpened knives, and you'll understand what I mean.

So, I wish you much fun.

Cheers,

Mathias

[try an Opinel #9 with carbon steel. Costs 7.00€, sharpens easily, cuts like hell. Just to teach yourself sharpening and to know what cutting means !]

Welcome to BF!

Those Gerbers are quite good. My brother has a Gator folder and he likes it very much, I've used it a few times and it feels really solid. I'm not too fond of synthetic handles for fixed blades, so I haven't tried the other knife out.

A knife is never sharp enough! :D Get a cheap knife and a medium ceramic or diamond stone to practice your sharpening. It's not difficult, just takes some getting used to. Look after your knives, they'll look after you.

Soon, probably thanks to one of the threads here, you'll decide that you need another knife, probably you'll find a "reason" and fool yourself into thinking you're not going to need another one after that. You'll learn more and find yet another "reason", to get another knife. With time, you'll come to see the light: the best knife is the next knife, and "enough" is not a word that can be used to discribe your knife collection. Then you'll be aboard the finantial ruin train with the rest of us!

:)

Welcome!

I haven't handled the Hersey Hunter, but I like my Gator. If you're a fan of Gerber Knives, you should check out the Gerber Silver Knights, very classy and just the right size for a pants pocket.

Best Wishes,
Bob

look at the money that is in there

say goodbye to it.

welcome to bladeforums.

Pete

PS. you don't need a sebenza yet. :)
just get a spyderco :D

But depending on how much of a skinflint you are, you may find yourself needing one soon... I've been here as long as SHS has, but I think I've managed to hold on to more of my money, even if not by much. Since I joined this forum three months ago, I've spent nearly $250 on knives, and that's NOTHING...

i was planning to buy MOD CQD Mark V ATAC, or more recently, a MOD Nightwing. Maybe for christmas :P.

But now im looking for a sharpener for my knives

Spyderco Sharpmaker 204.

Even the rawest novice will find it easy and fun to use and keep their knives extremely sharp.

Comes with excellent instructions and a video on how to use it.
