Got this one off ebay recently. I've found plenty of information on the history of HSB hardware but nothing on their axe sources. Anyone have any info?
I noticed a craftsman boys axe that appears to have been made by the same company. Didn't buy it as the bit looked like it had been on a grinder but maybe it was just bad light.

Here's the HH 28" haft it's going on.

The Craftsman that looks to be from the same manufacturer. The angle of the picture makes the bit look more flared and you can see the color change that scared me away.

Mann and Vaughn are two names most often associated with Craftsman in the later years. I have no idea who made the Hibbard or the Craftsman that you have pictured though.

I agree that the resemblance is a little suspicious. And I strongly suspect by the general shape that it may well be Mann edge tool Co but in no way am I positive.

I can tell you that I think vintage Mann's are very underrated and I also own two Hibbard boy's axes, one that looks identical to yours, it is in every way a first rate tool.

HSB sold out in 1962 so I thought odds were good for it to be an excellent axe. Appreciate the info Garry.

Regardless of who made it, it has the look of a quality vintage axe. Nice bevels and high centerline on the bit. I like the thick eye walls. They say 'durability' to me. I wold try hammering in that mushrooming a little before taking a file to it. The stamp will preserve better that way.

It's a great little axe and will be super handy on that 28" haft. I like it a lot. Thanks for the pics.

Thanks for your comments, I originally bought a 28" boys haft, the eye is so small I wound up putting it on an 18" haft. I like it on the 18 but now I'm looking for a boys axe to hang on my 28. I left the mushrooming as is just to not chance messing up the stamp. Pics of it on the 18 are in the what did you rehang today thread.
