I might order a set of these to learn throwing on. Any of you have it? are they any good? can they stand the abuse of throwing?

Features:
·Perfectly balanced to assure uniform rotation when thrown
·One-piece tempered 420 J2 stainless steel construction
·Patented handle design that guides the hand into the same consistant and accurate release each time thrown
·Lanyard holes

I'm guessing these are a bit better than the normal none tempered 420 j2 stainless steel throwers...

are these knife good enough to be use as hunting knife? or they 're only good for throwing?

If you want a thrower you can also use for utility. Look at the Cold Steel Tru flites. Pretty thick and have a nice edge to them, along with a paracord handle. You can get them for around 20 dollars if you look around. BTW, Hibbens are made by united. Just so you know.

Cold Steel has the Tru Flight Throwers on their seconds page for $15.99 plus shipping.

They are at the bottom of this page

the TRUE FLIGHT THROWER looks good but its only one blade. I want something with a set(3?) so I don't have to walk back and forth to my tartget every throw...

but nice knifes nonetheless!!

guess what, you can buy three of them ;) anyway, TFT is a much better thrower. I would say it's the best production thrower around.

I was interested in the Hibbens due to the blade shape, and purchased a set. Part of my job at the time was opening hundreds of cardboard boxes everyday, and I tried them out. They dull quickly, but this is to be expected of a throwing knife (tempered softer to aviod breakage). They throw very well. I like the design, they make pretty good utility knives...when one gets dull, move it to the back of the sheath and use the next one.

what are the seconds that much cheaper? are they totally out of factory spec.? I dont' want to order 3 and later on find out all of them to be out of balance. Thanks for the tips all.

Hibben throwers are too small for long distance throwing. Cold Steel throwers are larger in size (not to mention the better steel) making them better throwers. I would suggest get the CS between the 2 choices. There are better throwers in the market though if you care to search more.

i agree w/beluga, a bud got a hibben set like mentioned and they are toooo small, and light, to throw any distance at all. i think the cold steel torpedo thing would be the bomb imho for throwing, my bud has one ordered as we speak.

I was very happy with my truflite thrower(didn't have time any more).

As a side note, instead of using a wood board for target, try using a bunch of cardboard taped together. This will get chewed up, but is cheap and easy to replace, and isn't as hard on your edges/tips(not that this is really a concern with the TruFlite).

For boxes, go to walmart or whatever first thing in morning, and get the empty boxes from the stockers.

The Hibben throwing knives from United Cutlery are actually pretty reasonable.

I am no expert - but the person who hosted and presented the knife throwing championships at the 2003 Blade Show actually showed a Hibben and threw it during his talk.

But it was the larger sized one - probably the Thrower II at about 8.25".

Everyone is right on this thread - the small throwers are just too small for good throwing - they might be OK for fun indoor throwing (instead of darts :D) - but for outdoors and distance a heavier and larger thrower is preferable.

If you want to try the Hibben throwers I suggest getting the larger sized set.

Update on Cold Steel True Flight throwers. I just got a Christmas special flyer from Cold Steel in the mail. They have their seconds of Throwers all on sale for between $7.99 and $9.99 each. The have 4 different sizes.

Here is a quote from Cold Steels webpage regarding their seconds.

"What's wrong with this knife?" We've often heard this comment from people who have bought one of our factory seconds. They got the knife, inspected it and really couldn't understand why it was ever designated a second. Perhaps the profile is off by 1/16" or there is some surface imperfection. Whatever the reason, the flaw is always cosmetic in nature. The steel, heat treatment and the high performance you'd expect from a Cold Steel® knife have not been compromised one bit. Supplies are limited, order yours today!"

I have no affiliation with Cold Steel. Hey, I'm just sayin'.

I looked all over the flyer, all I can guess is that you will have to call them for those prices. They have a bunch of specials on this flyer. You may want to have them send you one along with their regular catalog.

Here are the item numbers and prices:

All of these are seconds.
XF80TFT2 True Flight $9.99
XF80TK102 Mini Flight $7.99
XF80TK122 Sure Flight $8.99
