Hi all,

just for fun some more bow drill practice. I am using a hickory spindle on a branch of walnut wood.

Just click on the pic and the video should play through my photo buckets.

nice! i like that you even used orange paracord :) details on that orange hand socket?

JV3, Thanks,

The bearing I use is a piece of G-10 handle material that I cut our in that shape. then I glued a piece of 0-1 steel to it with a divit I drilled into the piece of steel. It is very friction free and works great. If you need more pics of it let me know.

more pics would be nice. thanks!

BarBarossa, Yea it can be done with the hard woods. It is just harder to do. More stokes and some more pressure too.
The hardest part is carving the pieces if the wood is seasoned. I cut green pieces and then carve them. Then set them aside for a few days to dry out some and then start using them for the bow drill.
If you practice the bow drill give them a try too. I also mix and match the different hard and soft woods different spindles and hearths.

JV3, I have a couple of pics for you of my home made bearing/hand socket.

Like I said I just cut a piece of G-10 handle material and made it oval shaped and then glued a piece of metal with a drilled in divit to the G-10 material. It can be done with many other pieces of material ie wood, bone, rock.
It is not to heavy or thick.

Hope the pics help and if you have any more questions just let me know.
