Hi folks, I have never owned a Benchmade knife or any knife in CPM-S90V.
I'm pushing 60, been a knife guy all my life. I do not throw my knives. I am wondering about the brittleness of this steel or is it a non issue ? I have dropped 2 knives over the years onto concrete that broke. One was from the back of a deuce & a half (bayonet), the other was from a 6' ladder. I don't think either one should have broke but they did.

Just curious because it is a lot of coin to spend, in my world anyways. Thanks for the help.

Are you referring to the blade breaking or the tip breaking? If it's the latter, I don't know of any steel tip that is going to survive a fall on concrete. If it's the former, I wouldn't worry about S90V breaking from a fall unless it's from a really high height.

Just if it was to ever come out of the sheath & fall while doing everyday stuff. Can't really say how it would land if it fell. But not the point/tip specifically. Or accidentally fall off the top of a step ladder doing everyday stuff. Mostly the blade.

Thanks

Chippy steels, in my experience:
S110V, M390, S30V.
S90V I have only 2 knives in, and they're not as chippy but is definitely more chippy than say, S30V, M4, etc.

In more practical terms, if you cut into a nail with some force, these steels will probably chip. I once broke a little bit of the tip off of a S30V BM940 when I flicked it open and it hit a glass beer mug lol.

They're all relative low-mediocre toughness steel and not suited well for "hard use"

Good luck!

Hey TwinStick, I've dropped plenty of knives, here are some steels that have a much higher chance of success....these are some personal favorites:

M4 good at everything except rust resist
3V or 4V...like 3V better, I find 4V rusts a little easier
CRUWEAR not cheap, but awesome steel
154CM/CPM154 underrated steel...very well balanced
52100 very tough steel
Edit: Elmax is pretty good and tough too

Hope this helps!
