When going the hidden pin route, how deep are you seating the pins into handle material?
Also, do you use small sizes i.e. 1/8” or larger 3/16” - 1/4”?
Thanks

I use 1/16" 416 stainless pins for alignment or other hidden pins. The depth depends on the piece, but my thinking is that epoxy does most of the job securing. The pins provide alignment and protect it somewhat from knocks and bumps.

I usually use 3 normal pins as alignment pins and about 3 pieces of all thread so the epoxy has something to hold on to .
The alignment pins prevents sheering

To answer the so-far unanswered question, for depth I go about the thickness of the pin, but I don't measure. As long as it's long enough to engage the holes and short enough to avoid getting ground into during handle shaping it should be fine. I use 1/16 95% of the time. Brass if I have it because it's cheaper, but 416 if I don't.

the thing about hidden pins, is keeping them hidden.

I used 1/8" threaded stainless steel screws that I cut the heads off, added some in the guard too.

Just for kicks, drill the hole into your handle material one size larger than the screw or allthread you use that goes through the handle. Then thread it real quickly with a tap and you will have the epoxy engaging threads in both the handle material and the threaded rod. Good luck getting it off there.
