Hey guys ..its me again..I have a question about properly fitting a hidden tang handle.
Im going to use a mesquite block, but i want to put a piece of water buffalo in it as well as brass lining between the wood and water buffalo....should i try to build the handle as close to the size i need by gluing the pieces together or should i try to fit each piece by itself..what do you guys do?
Thanks..
luke

Luke, I do a lot of stacked handle hidden tang knives and I always put mine together one piece at a time and pre fit everything and then after I'm sure everything is ok I epoxy each piece as I put it together for keeps. Ron

Im afraid i need the remedial explanation. Does that mean you pretty much construct/sand the handle to where you want it then glue it up?Thanks for the response

Sorry Luke, I didn't explane very good. I do not sand anything down to size untill the epoxy has set up. Everything is kind of squared and ugly when I'm putting the stacked handle together. When everything is good and dry I then grind the handle to size. I'm including a picture of a stacked handle so you might understand how I go about it. Hope this helps. Ron

I do it like Ron dose. Make sure every thing is square and parallel and will fit right. I use a modified bar clamp to hold every thing together. Gib

Another thing Ron's excellent picture shows is that the sections other than the antler is square cut. This gives you a good reference point to grind better ovals or rounds on the handle and also to keep the ovals alligned with each other. Just do a rocking motion on your grinder and go easy, checking to make sure you are equallizing the sholders. In a nutshell, you keep your ovals alligned with the blade. I do it the way these fellas do, even with leather stacked handles.

Ok i get it im just a little slow..Thanks for the pics and explanation..i really need to get this thing done..been putting it off for a whilebut now i got no more excuses..Thanks again fellas.
