In looking at some older hidden-stick tang knives such as Marbles, I see they were available in either pinned stag or one piece (round?) stag. Any advantages for one over the other?

Personally I like the pinned, I like the oval profile better. in the solid one piece ones I much prefer the slimmer ones over the Fat ones. I am not sure the pinning adds security though, I assume they are pinned only to each other and not the tang

What are your preferences : NOTE, only the last two photos are of a knife I own, the rest are just representative photos

I prefer the pinned version as well, I like the added mechanical fastener on my knife handles.

All things being equal (secure handle) the one piece in the middle is my preference.

Thanks for the input. Other than the last two photo, the knives shown are not mine.

I am not sure the pinned scales are more secure, I believe these have a thin rod tang threaded on the end and the scales are only pinned to each other. Can anyone verify this?OGCA Marbles Campcraft 2000.jpg OGCA Marbles Campcraft 2000 handle 1.jpg OGCA Marbles Campcraft 2000 handle 2.jpg

This is the only Marble's knife currently in my stable.

Sceva I believe you're right, just pinned to each other, might be glued as well. It allows for the use of wider stag that otherwise wouldn't fit as it can be sanded to the proper thickness before the pieces are attached to each other. I don't think one method is more secure than the other in this case, just a matter of what you prefer.

When I picked up this Romo the pommel was loose. At least on this knife I can confirm definitely not attached to the tang. I tightened the nut in the pommel and peened it a tad. Been good ever since. I dont have a sheath so I really haven't carried it though. I did on a whim recently tried it in a 119 sheath and presto. It will see belt time soon now.
Edit to add I want to replace the "scales", as they're quite fat. Probably gonna go with some elk from the pet store.

I actually spoke to Mike Stewart and asked about the pinned vs solid. Per Mike, they did it both ways depending on the stag on hand / available as it let them use stag that would not work as a one piece.

I definitely prefer the Pinned, most I have seen appears to be nicer stag with more character and I much prefer the relatively oval cross section.
