Hey guys, quick question about hidden tang assembly.

I'm putting a simple wood handle on a Lauri blade with a brass bolster. This is going to be through-tang and peened at the end.

I already plan on using an epoxy in the handle, should I use anything between the bolster and the wood?

Wood has a tendency to move, it shrinks lengthwise a little and across grain alot. Even a well dried piece of wood will move with differences in temperature and humidity. It is a good idea to put a fiber spacer or two between metal and wood.

I'm not sure how much I'd worry about it. I make mostly kitchen knives and I've made quite a few with a stabilized maple burl and unstabilized ebony and have no problems. But perhaps that because the maple is stabilized.

Thanks guys.
I was thinking of using a leather spacer, dyed black with vinegaroon and compressed, between the bolster and wood. Would this suffice?

There's no need and I've never seen a single leather spacer that looked good
(Stacked leather can look good but that's different)

That leather will either shrink or swell, and if not sealed well, rot. Use epoxy between the two. I've never had a problem that way.

On bottom one knife is single leather spacer ,soaked with CA glue .Looks like black plastic now and I like it :)
Sorry , picture is not good ...
PS. This is my first hidden tang knife and I could not make good fit between bolster and handle , so I cheated a little with that leather spacer:D
