Hey Fellas!!
I've been posting a lot of questions around here lately regarding your views on different knives. I think I have FINALLY found a nice selection for my use...Hide-Away-Knife. For my daily use, LEO, I think this would be perfect. 3Guardsmen posted some good words...anyone else out there wanna chime in on the HAK?? Would appreciate it much!! Thanks!!

Can't you carry a larger blade or are you looking for something this discreet? Seems to me a sturdy folder or stout little fixed blade would be better. I don't know all the different situations you may find yourself in, but don't you have some other defensive equipment you would turn to first? The knife would double then as a last resort, but more likely a utility tool...I am missing something maybe?

kbog,

edged weapons for a uniformed patrol officer usually needs to be discrete. large or even medium sized fixed blades r usually unacceptable equipment on the duty belt... this is dictated by policy or a commander. a knife for defence, at least for me, is a LAST ditch weapon. like u have mentioned, other use of force option are available, but if that ugly scenario comes around where i need a knife, i do not want to try and use fine motor skills to open up a folder... i want a fixed blade that is ready from the time i grab it.

i do carry folding and auto knives, but they r for utility and emergency extractions. i have two small fixed blades discretely on my person, but they never see use (except for practice).

i have a HAK on it's way to me too, and can't wait to try it out. comments after i get it.

Yes, I do have other tools at my disposal (oc, baton, gun) however, there could be that one time when a perp goes to make a move on me and I cant get to my tools...or he may be too close for a bullet, oc or baton. I want a "last ditch" weapon that I can use "up close & personnel"!! Yes, it does need to be concealed. Lots of fellas carry a knife around with the clip exposed...I think to myself..."OK, If I'm gonna jump him...I know where his knife is!" NOT GOOD!! My front/back poket is not an option as it would take too long to deploy. So, deployment time is vitally important! With a HAK, Im thinking I could mount it behind my magazine pouch for easy access. The blade is fixed, so there is no need to worry about deployment time...and I dont have to worry about dropping the HAK as it would be mounted to my hand. MMM....I think I just sold myself on the issue!! A HAK it is!!! Thanks fellas!!!

Seems as though we think alike!! Haha!! When I submitted my response, I read yours! Good deal!!! Let me know how your HAK works out!!

Well, you two make plenty of sense. Good luck with the knife and may you NEVER need it!

MarineMustang,
up, it seems LEO have the same requirements where ever we r located. ;) i'm up North.... WAY up north!

theoldawg,
as for the Ka-Bar design, it looks to have merit. the only thing i would have a concern about is the width of the handle... i would have to see it in person to make a better evaluation. the Ka-Bar design is affordable and looks quite functional too. it's just that the HAK is thinner, uses better steel, and is more user friendly.

i still like the HAK design the best because it allows one to keep the blade out, while being able to grapple/grasp an offender, and/or be able to use ur sidearm or long gun without having to sheath the knife...or worse, drop the knife. the HAK design really does have a lot going for it.

Im not a leo and i carry a HAK curve on a ss neck chain behind my door access card. Use it to all the time to cut from wire insulations to opening bags of flour. I open the bag n dump the flour without putting the hak down. How cool is that!!!

I am going to highly recommend the HAK's!! Frontsight is also a pleasure to deal with!

I have some experience with the HAK's as I have sharpened quite a few for fronsight and have even done a batch of custom ones for her. They are a royal b!tch to grind as not much to hold on to. That said the finished product is well worth the trouble!

One of the best feature of the HAK's is the way you hold them. You are still able to use all your digits and open your hand and not drop your knife!!

They are also very light (even the steel versions) and thin, so are easy to conceal or attach to your vest.

If you think you might use your HAK for some light utility and self defense I would recommend one of the S30V blades. If only for last ditch self defense one of the Ti versions might be the answer.

If I was you I would get at least one and maybe 2, one for the vest and one for when off duty.
