HideAway in a Shoe

Since my roommate had a situation with a psycho off his meds in a restaurant that left him with 15 stitches in his face, he carries a couple HideAways with him.

One way he does this (other than the standard belt carry) that I think is very clev(er) is zip-tie'd through the tongue-loop under his laces in his shoe.

This is his Midnight HideAway, custom-finished by Justin Gingrich and custom-sheathed by Ken Brock.

When he does it, it ends out more rotated to the right side then what I did. He does this by allowing more slack in the zip-tie and smushing the zip-tie ends flat when it curves around.

My roommate is mildly grumbling at me that he'll have to re-do it . Thanks to him and his buddies for letting me interrupt their card game to take a pic of his foot. Thanks to one of his buddies' girlfriends for helping me convince him :) .

What size Zip-Tie? "40 lb, intermediate"

Like this one: http://www.buycableties.com/y840c.html

Will the 50 lb ones work? No, they are too wide for the eyelets.

Many thanks to SWAT / LEO type Jason "Doc" Mark for turning me on to the utility of zip ties with the HideAway.

Speaking of Jason, this is how he carries his Mick Strider custom-finished Ti HideAway in his ___ boots. (Jason, what kind of boots are these?)

Jason simply laces up directly into the standard bikini sheath. (no zip-tie)

No offense Frontsight, but wouldn't that situation be better handled with 9mm or .45, rather than a coupon cutter?

Otherwise, it looks like it makes a great utility and backup knife.

It probably could have been handle better by a cop, then a .45 or 9mm, but you have to use whats available at that moment. :)

Interesting. Does anyone have a measurement for the distance between the middle two eyelets? I think my boot eyelets are too close together (skinny chicken legs :)) for me to be able to do that.

Unless said cop just happened to be standing in between your friend and the psycho at that very moment, I beg to differ. I'm not saying that it would've been better to shoot the guy, but rather that it's somewhat misguided to have the mindset of depending on someone else for defense.

The HideAway is as far from a "coupon cutter" as it can get. It's a rather serious little cutter/people opener. Don't underestimate it.

You can't use pepper spray in a restaurant. You'll interfere with the other diners' enjoyment of their meals.

The Hideaway is like La Griffe. It will cut an opponent up. I don't see how it could stop a massive physical assault, though. It's the standard problem -- anything that could stop it wouldn't be as convenient and might not be with you when you need it.

How much of a magnetic signature does the Hideaway have? I bet that shoe is pretty good concealed carry, especially if he's got steel toes to help mask it! :D

However, if I had enough time to see the attacker coming that I could get to a Hideaway, I could get off my fat butt and slam the man with my chair. End of story. (Use what really works.)

It's just another way to carry this adaptable little knife. I love mine and EDC it. For a small fixed blade to carry on your person it's as close to perfect as there is.

Nice setup. Source? Price?
Sorry. Just noticed the link. Disregard the last.

Hi Esav, interesting you said that - because that was my actual reaction (drew my HideAway with my right hand and picked up a barstool with both hands to bash him with and get him away from my roommate), when I was at the counter and turned around. My first thought was "guy fight" because that's exactly what it looked like.

and the pyscho's blood pooring out of his body is a better idea

No, I don't like the idea of a bad guy bleeding all over the place. That's why I suggested bashing him. :) But of course a Hideaway or any sharp object is better than fingernails when the bad guy is inside your personal space.

I was being sarcastic about the other diners under the circumstances ... :p

Pepper spray is used for a very low threat.

Guns and knives for when your life is on the line.

One is not a substitute for the other.
