Hello everyone, I lost my Hideaway Knife and now I"m looking to get a new one. It's between the stonewash Tigerclaw in 440c stainless, and the exact same design except the knife is coated in black DLC and the steel it S30v stainless. The 440c model is $79 and the other is $169. Do you all think that its worth the extra money for the S30v model or not? The knife will be for frequent light utility and self defense. Is 440c a pretty good blade steel in general compared to S30v? Thanks everyone!-----As a side note, I am aware of the apparent issues the company is dealing with and I am willing to take the risk.

I'd say it's personal preference. S30v is obviously a better steel, better edge retention and so forth. 440C is easier to maintain. If you got the extra money to spend, go with the S30v, that's what I'd do.

440C is no slouch and that is a big price difference. I would go with the less expensive one. Were you satisfied with the performance of your last one?

Very satisfied. But if one will outpreform the other to a high degree, and the price difference is worth it, I would most likley go for the s30v model. On the other hand I have heard that s30v has some microchipping issues, and if it just outpreforms the 440c by a small margen, I dont think its worth it.

I've got a used car here for $7,900 that has a 15 gallon gas tank and another one for $16,900 that is identical in every way except that it has a 20 gallon gas tank -- if you buy that one you won't have to stop at gas stations as often!!!!!one!!!

Sometimes the choice is unclear when you are making the buying decision. The day you lose the knife, it will be obvious which one you should have chosen.

Got a 440C one shipping out to me right now. I'm a user rather than a collector so budget was a factor. But even splurging like I did, for the price of the admittedly nice looking S30v, I could get two 440c models, an extra sheath, a belt rig, and ten dollars of odds and ends for the sheaths. I'd rather have multiple decent knives than one excellent one, but that's just me. Some prefer only the best, though.

Also note, after months of hassle with shipping and sharpening, the company looks to be coming together very nicely. By the time you get yours ordered the shipping time may very well be under a week. The problems came because the owner had to use his own money to get the knives made, a very scarce minority pay up front to have their knife made, so he has to do everything out of his own wallet then collect later. I've gotten email updates for a few weeks, he now has a very, very big shipment in of the Utility models along with the DLC midnight ones. This is anything but a small operation by now like I used to think, he sent me a picture of a few hundred Utilities in a pile fresh from the sharpener. There has to be over a couple thousand knives to size, make, sharpen, and sheath. They're not doing as many customs from the artists, but if these production models take off I can see a few coming back.

Do you really expect to see such a significant performance increase during your "frequent light utility and self defense" to justify paying more than 50% for S30V version? Unless you enjoy needlessly throwing cash away, go for the 440c version.

I like that analogy :D

I am not trying to start a negative SH&* slinging match here, but in the interest of my fellow knife nut, may i suggest you check some of the HAK threads on this forum and some of the other "usual" forums.

I am not going to go into the whole reason behind this statement, i am sure most of you are aware of the story regarding HAK but it may be wise to do some more research into the Hideaway company before investing your $ into this.

I already understand the issue. If you would look at my 1st post that started this thread, at the end I informed everyone- "As a side note, I am aware of the apparent issues the company is dealing with and I am willing to take the risk." Thanks for your concern.

i ordered the cheapest one last week. also i've asked question about international shipping and been responded to. Looks like they're back to business.

Sorry, i missed that. :o

I Hope it all works out well.

Just a thought but why not buy two of the cheaper one since 2xcheapest is almost equal to the s30v one :)

That way you get a beater and a keeper for the price of a keeper :)
