Hideaway Knives in Massachusetts

I am thinking about buying a hideaway knife, but I am not sure what catagory it would fall under in massachusetts laws. Does anyone know if they are legal to carry. Since there is a high probability that the knife would be used in a self defense situation (thats what they are made for), it would be a very bad thing if it was found to be illegal when the police are investigating an incident.

Check the stickies at the top of the forum. Chances are it is considered concealed

Massachusetts knife laws do not even mention the word concealed, so there are no requirements that a knife must be carried either concealed or non concealed. Technically, there is nothing in the laws that prohibits fixed blades of any length, but because of the unique design of the hideaway knives, I am not sure if they could fall under another catagory of knife prohibited in MA.

I've had a cop that works in a pretty tough neighborhood look at mine.

"Ya know, a rookie cop would bust you for that."

"Oh come on. It isn't a brass-knuckles type of thing."

"It isn't that. It's that ridged section on top for your thumb. A rookie might think that was a second serrated edge. You'd get turned out when you got to the station, but it would be ugly before then. Just so you know."

Look up chapter 269-10 under the MA General Laws, online should be easy enough to find. It is the chapter that covers what is considered a dangerous weapon in MA. The basics for knives are no autos, no double edged, no ballistic knives, no dirk knives etc. Concealment of a knife is not an issue, unless you are asked by a police officer if you have a weapon, just be up front and tell them, yes I have knife, no issues, unless you have a warrant out for you and at that point even possessing the simplest of knives becomes a dangerous weapon and a felony. That chapter and section will go into details for you.
