Hiding announcements?

There are so many announcements at the top that it's making me have to scroll down the page to even start seeing threads. That's really crappy IMO and I'd love to be able to hide them or disable them from being displayed. I rarely find them relevant to my interests, and I've been here long enough that I don't need to see 3-4 threads up top about the rules. It doesn't make me want to click them and read them, as I already have a long time ago.

They're there for a reason...primarily that Spark wants to make sure that folks see them, read them and adhere to them.

It seems to me that you've needed some reminders over the course of your membership if the five infractions in your profile are any indication.

Glad that having to scroll down the page is the biggest problem you're facing these days. Many aren't as fortunate as you.

Glad to see that you're not interested in streamlining your forum.

You know, its possible to be a moderator without being a wise acre too. Why not a please or a thank you or a smiley face once in a while? Increasingly, this is what we get. Its not polite, and its not helpful.

And I've had more than 5 infractions, in case you want to weave that in here somewhere.

I might have been a little less "testy" if it weren't for the "that's really crappy" remark...especially under the circumstances. There are nicer ways to frame a request imho.

Then again, most of your posts make me testy as well, so go figure. I try to use emoticons as appropriate. If you look through my posts (both as a forum participant and as a moderator) you'll find them used liberally throughout.

Not sure if that's helpful to you (and I don't see where a please or thank you applies at the moment).

Let's all try and calm down a little here. I should have chosen better words, and I'm sorry if that insulted you or any of the sites staff.

I don't have a problem with them showing up, but I wish there was a way to either X out of them once I've seen them, or click a minimize arrow for that particular section so it won't take up as much space. I know having to scroll isn't a "big deal" but when you have to do it 100s of times when browsing, and they're the same announcements every single day, it's a waste of space IMO. For instance, I've already clicked like on the bladeforums facebook page, why do I still need to look at the announcement on every forum page? It's just not necessary.

As far as my rules violations, I know where the rules are posted. Posting an announcement doesn't make me want to go read them. Getting infractions, or my own general curiosity makes me go find the rules and read them.

No problem, 00...appreciate your taking the time to express your POV. No hard feelings taken nor intended.

Given the problems that Spark has been having with the server and software of late, I'm not sure where your request will fall in the continuum of things needing to be addressed.
That said, I'm sure Spark will see this thread and take action if he feels it is necessary or appropriate. Maybe some of the announcements can be pared down.

I know he's had his hands full lately. Like you had said earlier, this really isn't a big deal and probably should be far down the list of things to do. But I just wanted to put this out there and see if something could be done about it, as I've been on multiple forums which had a feature for this which really helped tone down all the outside stuff and focus on the forum itself. I'm not saying the announcements aren't important, because Spark wouldn't put them up if they weren't, but some of them really only need to be seen once to get the point across.

Thanks for giving this issue some of your time and hope something positive comes of it. If I'm the only one bothered by the announcements, I'll just shut up and deal with it.

I'll throw my .02 fwiw.

I almost never notice a "new" announcement. About the only one I check are the rules for the exchange every so often since I know for sure they have been changed in the past without changing the updated date.

I think I have brought this up before, but if it were mandatory to read the announcements before viewing the forum, and if we could then mark them as read and they would drop from view (still having them accessible through a link maybe), then when there was a new announcement everyone would have to read it, or at least say they did, to continue viewing the forum.
That way we can't plead ignorance, and people really will be aware of new announcements.

While we are wishing, I wish we could mark stickies as read and make them disappear until they are updated as well.

I have also suggested this in the past and it was refused.

On a computer with a scroll wheel, no big deal
On a laptop, what a PITA

Especially for those who read the forums on a phone, (an increasing group)
I think this would help.

Let me read them and then mark them as read and consolidate.

I'm not interested in buying patches
I don't do Facebook
I can't send a letter to your USA politicians - as I'm not in USA
I know how to google manufacturer catalogues

Having them on every page everytime still doesn't drive users to read them.
You need to have a i read them type thing- especially on the exchange pages
Something there that works may actually cut down moderator workload.

That's funny, every post I've ever made here has been from a BlackBerry. The announcements have never bothered me in the slightest.

People who complain about something they're getting for free, though? Well, that's right up there.

What happens when the Stickies get taken down? We get bombarded with stuff like:

"How come I got infracted for trying to sell a knife without a membership? This rule should be posted so everyone can see!"

"How come I got infracted for asking the value of my knife? If it's against the rules, it should be posted so everyone notices!"

"How come I didn't know about the Georgia Preemption bill? This was very important! This should have been stickied!"

Of course, some people are going to ignore those threads and complain when they get infracted anyway, but at least when they're up there, they have no excuse.

Sure, some might be a nuisance. I don't do Facebook or care about the WS&S patches. But this is Spark's forum, and he thinks they're important, so I certainly don't mind him posting announcements that he thinks are important. What's irrelevant to some isn't necessarily irrelevant to others. And as for being a "nuisance", in the grand scheme of things, surely there's more important things to worry about than the slightest bit of scrolling, no? Like when I'm watching episodes of "24" and the beginning of the episode recaps what I just watched a few minutes ago. I already saw it, and it's really crappy that I have to sit through it. Except that I don't, but it's still really crappy IMO that I have to cue ahead to where the episode really starts. Totally ruins my whole sitting-on-my-ass-doing-nothing-productive experience, and my mouse hand get so tired with all the extra effort it takes.

And BTW, why can't Jack Bauer pronounce the word "nuclear" properly? He's supposed to be such a badass government agent and such a smart guy, but he keeps saying "nukular". That's really crappy IMO.

What were we talking about?

Oh yeah, niggly little stuff that isn't worth the effort it takes to complain about. Just deal with it.

They don't bother me either, I just completely ignore them.
That's the problem, they are meaningless when they appear all the time and give me no way to determine what is, or is not new to me without reading them.
I don't want them moved because they are in my way, I want them moved so when I do see an announcement I will know it is something I have not seen before or has been updated.

Aaron, those are good points, especially about Bauer.

Leaving them up is fine with me, Like I said I just ignore them anyway

Maybe it could be set up where there is some way to easily determine, or be notified if an update is new, or modified. Stickies act like regular threads in this regard and are bold when you have not read them, why not make announcements do the same?

Announcements and stickies aren't the same thing. In most cases there is an announcement for the rules that just links to the sticky with the rules. And people still make those kinds of posts regardless of how many warnings and notices you provide.

You would get more compliance if the announcements were active when new, and able to be hidden when read.

Planterz
Announcements, ,not stickies.
I'm not proposing they be eliminated, just made active for new ones and hidden when already read.
It will attract MORE attention.
They would only be hidden if you have already read them.
As said previously, you are just training all users to ignore all of them every time..

If it's not important to you, then why post and argue against it here ?
that seem unnecessarily argumentative
