I've not been collecting GECs as long as some here, and my recent acquisition has me scratching my head. I saw that Great Eastern Cutlery was re-releasing a batch of hoof knives on the #73 frame and really wanted one.

I tracked one down but was surprised to see that it appears to be a GEC branded knife in 1095.

I know that Great Eastern Cutlery has put the acorn shield on some fixed blade knives that were made of their high carbon steel. But have they ever done so with a Slipjoint?

Yes, the original 2013 release of hoof pick knives was also 1095 with acorn shields. That is why your knife is stamped 725213, even though it was just recently made. They used leftover parts from the earlier run.

The GEC acorn shield rule is this - all stainless steel knives have the acorn shield but not all acorn shields are on stainless steel knives. Meaning, sometimes they put the acorn shield on carbon steel knives.

Interesting. Thanks for the clarification. I did know that, supposedly, all stainless steel knives would have the acorn Shield. But I also thought that went the other direction that all acorns would be stainless steel.

And I and I did know that these Hoof knives were being made from parts from 2013, but I did not realize that the original release had acorn Shields. I guess I will have to look into those!

Any members here have pictures of the any members here have pictures of the 2013 release of Hoof knives?

Thanks, @blackmamba. It's interesting, they even have the etchings that you'd usually associate with stainless. Perhaps all of this has bee discussed in the past. A topic like this can be difficult to locate using the search feature. Anyone know if there are other slipjoints in 1095 that have similar shields or markings? Or is this the only one?
