I was wondering who carries high carbon blade on a everyday basis? what do you do to keep them shining?
thanks

I' ve carried both Bob Doziers Agent and recently a General Utility for many years now. Because D2 is a high carbon tool steel it does not take on a very "shiny" finish. It gives what is commonly termed an "orange peel" effect. But to minimize staining/ corrosion I simply clean it off with soap and water after use with food/ organics whenever possible. Otherwise I give it a nice rub with a Tuff Cloth every once in a while. No problems so far. BTW, the D2 Bob uses has at least 12% chromium which makes it pretty "stainless" for a tool steel.

Hello,

Actually the "ORANGE PEEL" effect is caused by improper polishing techniques, not alloy composition.

Lately I carry either an Opinel or more often an Old Timer, both high carbon. I've usually used either BreakFree or Eezox, and it seems that Eezox offers some better lubrication properties as well as protection. I also use both on the carbon steel knives that I carry in the trunk. I like the 'one stop shopping' of such products as they're very good lubricants, they penetrate well, and offer good protection.

I carry a Fikes "CABIN BOY" and just wipe it down. An occasional coat of Renaissanc wax helps. This knife shows wear but it's held up well. Forged from a car spring.

I carry self made knives of high carbon steel, mostly 1095, 5160 or 52100. Why keep them shining when they can and do develop such a beautiful blue/grey patina?
I just keep them dry, so after getting grey they don't rust anymore.

Top of Texas Knives at www.toptexknives.com sells Tuff Cloth. I hear great things about it from KodiakPA, and I trust what ever he says on the subject of knives.

Hope that helps,

I carry a Greco and he puts a hard lacquer coat on all but the cutting edge. For that I use the one and only Marine Tuf-cloth.
Soon to carry a Blade made blade.
