Finally taking the plunge into the world of 50" high def and would love any guidence towards anything under $3,000. Sony, samsung, Panasonic, Pioneer?

thanks so much,

p

I've got a couple of Samsung 50" DLPs (1080p and 720p), and they've been treating me good so far. I haven't had them too long (6-7 months), though, so I couldn't speak about longevity. When I bought them, I was looking at a 60", but for not much more money I got 2 50s. Can't hang 'em on the wall, though. :(

i just picked up a 50" pioneer that i absolutely love. i have 5 other high def LCD's and a DLP and this plasma blows them away. it is so smooth and vivid. if you watch something with a lot of color (my favorites are boston legal and csi miami) the tv is simply amazing.

this is just a DVD, not high def

I own a 40" sony 1080p lcd hanging on my bedroom wall and a 65 in mitsubishi dlp for the living room

I love both for what they are...

if I could afford a 65" lcd, then thats what I would have bought

Sony and Samsung are the lcd leaders from my research

I'v heard in other forums the Major guys are moving away from plasma, dlp and moving to LCD. ANy truth to this?

If you want the BEST picture, go DLP. I went with Samsung, because their new light source is high intensity LEDs, which have a much longer lifespan than older "light bulb" based DLPs (run cooler and start up quicker too). Also, the LED light engine gets rid of the "rainbow" effect some people saw with the older DLPs that used a color wheel to make the color palette. So in short, the 11 inch thickness is the only drawback. To me that wasn't a deal buster, and the positives far outweigh the negatives.

I have a samsung 1080p LCD screen and Samsung Blu Ray. The picture quality is very good. I looked at several brands before settling on Samsung, they seemed to be the best value, having higher picture quality at a lower price than other premium brands.

I've had the TV a few years now and its worked well, I'm suire there are newer models out now though.

Plasma is on it's way out due to costs and weight compared to LCD technologies.

I think that the Korean companies are the only ones with Plasma TV roadmaps extending thru this year while several of the Japanese have announced ending production and going to purely LCDs this year. LCD screens are easier to manufacture and newer technologies integrating LED inverters directly to the panel allow them to be made brighter while being thinner and consume less power.

IF you have 16-18 inches of shelf space then NOTHING short of a tube TV or uber-expensive CRT projector looks better than the Sony SXRD rear projection 3 chip LCD sets.

the only reason plasmas arent more popular is because of the price and weight. a 50" can weigh 70-100 lbs, versus a 25 lbs 50" LCD. however, it still doesnt make the LCD a better unit. Plasmas arent the brightest, but they are smooth and have the best looking color. DLP's can produce more colors, but they dont look half as good.

I never once said anything about picture quality. I merely posted that Plasmas are going away.

Rember Beta v. VHS? Quality doesn't win the game. Its all about economics and selling more for less in order for the manufacturer to win marketshare and survive.

You can believe me or not, but I do business in this industry.

just got a panasonic 50" 1080p plasma, the blacks are fantastic and the picture is very sharp. It's funny I had a DLP before and loved it, but the sales guy said that DLPs are not going to be supported after this year. I'm not sure I believe that and said the plasmas were the best.

I really don't know, a tv is a tv. the 32" LCD in my basement "playroom" is just as nice in my opinion.

it isnt about that. will ferrari ever close shop? nope. there is still a market for higher end gear. the msrp on both of my amps in my vehicle retail for over $7k. people still buy them. its like a $2500 baer 1911 versus a $500 glock..

This is an endless debate. I hated selling TV's at Bestbuy because of it.

it really is! just buy what looks good to you and fits your budget.

while i prefer plasma i own 2 lcd's and 0 plasma's because i got better deals on them but to me they dont look nearly as good as a pioneer plasma

Thanks Gang!

Landed on the Samsung 47" lcd w/ direct tv.

It is as incredible as everyone says, and I'm delighted I didn't get any larger.

My friend owns a Vizio plasma in about the same size. One thing is- if you plan on going plasma, you'll have to break it in if you plan on playing video games. Something about the image getting burned into the screen, or something like that. Not a TV expert. (Also, don't Plasmas have very bad glare in room with more sun? moreso than other tvs?)
I have a Samsung Sync LCD. Very nice TV. I think ours is a 37". We would have gotten bigger, just bigger couldn't fir in the pre-built cabinet.

i have noticed burn in issues with a 50" panasonic plasma that is sort of in the family. i would rather have a high end LCD than that hunk. the only break in issues with my pioneer was the colors changing slightly. i have re-calibrated it once and its good to go. burn-ins arent even a concern with this unit. great TV.

as far as glare. i dont notice anything. i guess positioning has something to do with that. looking at it as i type this, i see glare off the TV's gloss black frame, but nothing off of the screen.
