High End Carry - shaving down my collection

So lately I've been trying to look at my knife collection in a more practical way - What do I use? What do I carry regularly? Do I really want to retain any "Safe Queens"? Here's a rundown of what I've got left in my collection: (folding knives) Bradley Mayhem titanium blue handle, bradley alias1 plain edge, titanium handles, bradley underboss limited run black blade maple scales, protech godfather all black, protech small don, spyderco paramilitary black blade plain edge, spyderco military satin blade plain edge, benchmade 640 horn handle, spyderco endura black handle, spyderco native OEF edition, Chris reeve sebenza black micarta handles. (fixed blades) Cold steel trailmaster San Mai III, Kabar SK warsword, SOG seal pup elite, Benchmade CBK, Randall knives combat companion full tang. I've got a few multi-tools lurking about also.

Now, I've already sold a few knives at the local gun store, and made some decent coin doing it. Most of what I sold was on par with benchmade blue grade - a sog, a gerber air ranger, a couple CRKT's, etc etc. I just felt it didn't make sense to keep 20 something knives in a desk drawer when so very few of them get used. So, when making my decision to sell I decided to let some of the lower quality, lesser used knives go. Recently, I've decided to evaluate why i should keep certain knives, and sell others. I do believe each job has the right tool, and there's the right tool for every job. While the Spyderco Military is an EXCELLENT knife for work and camping, it's not so practical to carry around outside of work. I'd miss it too much if I sold it, and i'm not sure if i'll be deployed again or not so I can't bring myself to sell it. I also couldn't ever bring myself to sell a knife my father has given me - too much sentimental value there, and someday i'd like to pass it on to one of my children.

I'm in the process of paring down which knives I should keep, and which ones I should sell. I'm trying to retain at least 1 knife per "job" that I can think of. Honestly, being at home and not deployed, my main knives to keep are the ones that would qualify as "EDC". I try to rotate which EDC knife I take to work every week or two. I do go to the field quite frequently, so the Randall and the SOG are obvious keepers. I like to camp, and occasionally get tasked out to do "post beautification" - weed cutting, so the Kabar zombie and trailmaster get their use. I suppose what I have ahead of me is the task of deciding which blades get to lurk around in my closet waiting for their "use" to come up in my life, and which ones sadly are not used, and need to go to a new happy home.

Thanks for any advice.

My personal recommendation would be to keep what you use and any thing that can't easily be replaced later if you regret selling it.....just my 0.02 on the subject.

And welcome to blade forums to!!

check. i've already decided anything discontinued is staying. These are some hard decisions to make! thanks for the help.

I guess It all comes down to personal choice.

I for one love having MANY knives and love having choices.

I carry and use all of my knives, yes some see more pocket time than others but they all do see pocket time.

If you really want to get rid of some of your knives than I would choose knives you don't carry as much.

But if you ask me, I say KEEP EM!!

:D

id say you need to expand a little 20 isn't near enough to call a collection haha

but in all seriousness what you have is very solid collection & personally id keep em all if you can, if not sell some of the more easily accessible one first than work your way down...... If you are a knife nut like most of us here, those knives you sell will eventually work their way back into the collection some how

It really comes down to your personal finances. If you don't NEED to sell, I would keep, because you can still fondle your safe queens from time to time, show them off, put them in Youtube videos, etc.

But who am I to talk?: I'm paring my collection down to 12 knives (the number of spaces in my display case).

Lately, I've been trying to pare down my collection and making sure every knife I have is different enough from the others that they can fulfill a different role than others. This has led me to having knives that are very different from each other and can be used in many different situations. It also leads me to buying knives that are not very similar to each other because I don't like having redundancies.

I used to have about twelve PM2's in the super-steels, and an equal number of CRK's... but no more, even though I love 'em. Now I have a couple of Sebs, a couple of cheap PM2's, couple of Striders, and some other stuff but nothing out of line. I do NOT vary my knife carry much at all. I usually carry a large Seb, but recently have replaced it with a Grayman DUA as I believe it fits my hand-size better. The other folders are NIB and just sit there in a box, waiting to be traded or sold for something different. I don't want to use the others, as I like being able to sell them ANIB.
