Owners of truly rebuildable custom boots chime in with recommendations. I'm looking to take the leap into a custom fitted pair of work boots. Not sure if I want pull-ons or lace-ups but I don't have the funds together for this yet, so there's lots of time to think about it.

I ordered the free DVD and catalog from Wesco Boots and really like what I see. I'm actually sort of tempted to toss the whole custom fitting idea and just order a pair of their factory seconds. But that would be missing the point. And White's appears to either have blown off my catalog request or (more likely) only do bulk mailings a few times a year and they've got me on some sort of dust covered list in a mailroom somewhere. Either way, not a good sign. And I don't see a safety toe option with the Russell Moccasins (maybe I just overlooked it) and they don't seem to offer a very high heel.

Looking forward to some opinions and recommendations. I spend a LOT of time on concrete (indoors and out), and a lot of time on searing hot and freezing cold asphalt. Waterproofness isn't an issue. Neither is thinsulate or goretex. Just looking for a great fit and some serious comfort. Well, long lifespan and rebuildability also.

Thanks.

Sorry to hear of your bad experience with White's. I've got four pairs (Lace- to-toe Smoke Jumpers and Packers ), three pair have been rebuilt and I'm very happy with them. I'd suggest you give 'em another try or call and ask to speak with Mark. There are others comparable....Wescos and Nick's come to mind, but the White's have certainly done well by me. Good luck.

I recommend taking a trip down to the local Red Wings Shoes store. Most of the people there tend to know what they're talking about, and it's amazing what a well-fitted pair of shoes can do to realign the spine. Find a pair that employs a last that contours with your arch, not to mention being proper in terms of width. If your shoes ever get a little beat up, you can get them resoled and re-heeled.
