I have been looking through the spartan, busse, and fehrman knives and i was just wondering if most of you guys keep them for collection or hard use? Because while i know that you would never want your knife to fail and all but i still couldn't see buying one of those knives and then using it for camping chores. No doubt they are fantastic for hard use but i would feel to guilty.

I don't have any use for a knife of that type, even when camping. So if I bought one it would surely be for collecting only.
But the knives from those three particular companies are so aesthetically unappealing, I wouldn't collect them either. :p

I have several knives that I have, as my father used to say, "put back" and have no real intention of using. That's not to say that I wouldn't EVER use them, but I just don't see much need to use, and possibly damage or lose, a $500 custom blade when Buck, Ontario, KA-BAR, and others make perfectly serviceable knives that do the job just as well for less than a fifth of the cost.

I think it really depends on your perception and view on value.

If you make $100,000+, I don't think you wouldn't mind beating on a $1000 Busse Battle Mistress when you go camping.

But if you're a broke college student like I am, it would take months for me to save up and afford a Hinderer or a Busse, I would definitely keep it in the safe and just fondle those knives, and take out my Ontario RTAK II and Buck110 out for some use.

my most expensive fixed and folder are around the $200+- mark... i use them without hesitation if im carrying them.
on days where i know im going to do a lot of rough cutting (borderline abuse) i'll bring something "cheaper" out.

i used to baby knives but no longer do so. at one point i had hundreds of knives and only used a dozen or so of them.
when it came time to sell them i felt extremely bad cause i had no idea how well they would function outside of being eye candy.

use em if you got em

I carry a one off Reese Weiland Ti fixed blade quite often. Use em.

+1 well put!

Art knives I would not use, Busse and the like are hard use tools no need in keeping it locked up collecting dust. That's called disrespect.

Why but the best cutlery designed for performance and not use it?

Using a tool for it's intended purpose brings about another level of appreciation- one that goes well beyond that of aesthetics. Can't truly know a blade until you cut with it and make it your own. Besides, it makes this hobby more fun.

I use it

I agree that it is up to your perception. I have a few that I just admire and some I use fully!!

I won't buy or own a knife that I don't intend to use. I am unlikely to ever buy a knife that expensive, but if I did, I would feel obliged to use it to justify the purchase.

I use maybe two or three knives and the rest are Safe Queens ~~~ but that is going to change as I am selling most of my knives as I am back on my Gun kick again and also it takes up to much of my time and money to do both. In the last month I have bought 2 Pistols ~ 4 Rifles and 1 Shotgun and that makes me think why I was buying knives.!* lol

I have a large Busse collection. About ten of them are designated users, and the rest are safe queens. I like them, like having a lot of them, like using them, and it's my money. I don't mind using one at all, if I have a purpose that it fulfills best. Although I am perfectly willing to use them if needed, I see no point in beating up all of them just to make a point about having users only. Whether users or collectors only, they all bring me pleasure.

My collection has a deeper story behind it. After my daughter suffered traumatic brain injury in a hit and run, and me being retired while my wife still worked, I spent several years caring for her. I was severely tied down, not being able to engage in the outdoor activities I had enjoyed all my life. Busse knives and the Busse forum became life-lines for me, helping me maintain my sanity. There are some fantastic people over there. Each knife purchased was a promise to myself that someday I would get into the outdoors again. Now that Kim has progressed to largely caring for herself, I am beginning to keep those promises.

I am a totally unapologetic, dedicated promoter, collector, user and fan of Busse knives.

If it is a production knife that I can replace, it gets used. I do carry and use a XM18, Umnumzaan, and Gunhammer on occassion.

I just gave my most expensive knife to my boy , he turned 15 and I figured it was as good a time as any for an upgrade . He got my RAT1 , I spose its more a sidegrade tho , he is also carrying his own self made knife .

I will one day get my hands on some busse infini , Ill eventually figure out how to buy one .. I tried the exchange but Im a little slow to beat the dealers on the ones in my range , or the seller refuses to deal with foreigners outside the US ... but one day Ill get there .

I wont be keeping it as a safequeen tho , knives are for using , if its for just looking at , its not a knife , it is knife like art ... in my opinion anyway .
