High-end sharpener question (what's it called?)

Help!

1. First of all, I forgot what it's called. I've never seen one but I've heard it's a similar concept to the Lansky or Gatco systems where the knife is stationary; blade-toward-you and you move the stone at the knife except instead of a clamp you have to hold the knife by hand. It's a professional-type system and I think it costs around $200.

2. Where do I get one?

3. Are they fast at reprofiling knives? For example, I often buy a knife and immediately sharpen it at a lesser angle. Removing all that material takes forever on a Lansky or Gatco. Is this one any faster?

4. Are the stones diamond and replaceable?

Thanks.

1. Edge Pro? I'm trying to decide if you're serious or not.

2. http://www.edgeproinc.com/

3. With the optional coarse stone, yes. But the stone will wear out with a lot of use. It's only $11 so no biggie.

4. No, and yes. They're water stones. See the link for more info. All I can say for sure is that they work extremely well.

I just got my EdgePro the other day!

It is fast at reprofiling knives. The fastest way to reprofile a knife, though, is with a belt sander :) For no power, a large coarse silicon carbide stone and freehand reprofiling will be faster than the Edge Pro, because you are working over a larger surface and you can use way more pressure. However, the Edge pro will reprofile much faster than a Lansky type sharpener.

There is a lot more to learn to get right with the Edge Pro over something liek the Lansky. You have to move the knife alot while sharpenign to keep the edge smooth and even. but it doesn't take long to get that right. I have sharpened 3 or 4 knives now, and each knife produced better and better results. The last knife I did (custom MEUK by Allen Blade in O1 steel) started to treetop shave a bit. Every edge I have gotten with the edge pro has been good. I am getting better and better, but my worst effort so far is still great by normal standards.

I got the Apex with stoen upgrade (getting all the stones is a must if you want to get the most out of the piece of gear). Try www.edgeproinc.com for info. I ordered direct and they were super.

Fulloflead,
It's the Edgepro allright. The best sharpener on the market. Definatly get the stone upgrade kit & video with the Apex model. Might as well get 1 or 2 xtra coarse stones too cause they wear out first.
The first time you make a razor edge that you can literally see yourself in, like a mirror, you'll know the sharpening quest is over :)

Here's another recent thread about 'em.

Also, John Jensen sells EdgePros now, & he's another great guy to deal with.
He carries some great knives at very good prices & has lots of hard to find & close out items.
I've dealt with him for years & no problems.

Thanks a million, guys for all the into. That's what I'm looking for. It's a bit cheaper than I had originally thought. :)

John thanks you for the recommendation!:D

I ordered the Apex, upgrade kit and video. I can't wait!
Thanks again, everybody!

I wish Ben Dale offered online ordering. I would have placed an order some time ago. I never get around to calling orders in on the phone, and I don't feel like emailing my CC#.

Glad I read this thread, just today, I ordered an Apex. It makes me feel my decision was right. I wanted a quick method to reprofile and this looks like the one. For quick touch ups I use a Spyderco 204.

Me too. I like the spyderco and use it for touchups but it only has the one angle. I'm tired of working my butt off reprofiling on a Lansky/Gatco system. If the Apex is as good as they say I'll probably use it for everything.

God bless Ben Dale at Edge Pro it is a fantastic system I've had mine for about a year and I love it, but it's still a crutch. Learn To sharpen freehand, all it takes is practice, practice, practice.
