What are the best production sodbusters? I have a Case Sodbuster Jr. with stainless steel, and the steel and fit and finish aren't really satisfactory. I've seen German Eye, German Bull, Boker, Queen, Buck Creek, and Kissing Crane. Which of these have the best fit and finish, and do any of them have noticeably bad steel, like the Case? Also, how much better is the Case CV over the Case SS?

I only have a Case CV Sodbuster. Fit and Finish are satisfactory to me. Either there is variation from knife to knife, or our standards differ.

I find the Case CV to be enough better in edge retention that I notice it in EDC. But it is still not as good as Buck 420HC in edge retention.

Only sodbuster I have is a custom by Keith Johnson.... :D

I'm looking at a Case or Queen for my next one. Case seems to have good QC&FF from what I've handled.

I have a Case Jr. and Sr. and both have excellent steel, fit and finish.
I also have a couple Rough Rider Soddys, and they too are far superior to those others you mentioned.

The CV is 6.774% better than SS.

Well, when I say bad fit and finish I mean a blade that's not even close to centered and pins that neither fit the holes perfectly nor lay flush with the handle material.

The Case Sod Buster Jr in CV has better F&F than the SS version. As far as I know the Case Sodbuster jr cv has the best f&f in production. You could also look at the Queen Country cousin knife. If all else doe not work, try the K R Johnson version

God Bless

+1 on Keith's work.

They did at one time. My Dad has an old one that looks more like an awl than a knife blade.

I have a large Boker Sodbuster sent to me by a forum member here, and the F&F is pretty good for a working knife. I bought a Case Jr. Sodbuster for my son, and the F&F is a little better than the Boker.

"...noticeably bad steel, like the Case..."? I'm not sure what your criteria are for steel quality, but I have yet to find a Case blade that couldn't take an excellent edge and hold it for a long time in use. I had no interest in their stainless until recently, but once I started using a "Tru-Sharp" blade regularly, I found that it holds up almost as well as the CV.

thx - cpr

Of course a Sodbuster was originally a workman's knife and would likely be sturdy but a bit coarse in finish.

The CASE stainless small sodbuster I have is well finished.
The German Bull has excellent stag and overall very well put together but the stainless is not much cop, doesn't sharpen too well.
A Böker sodbuster is in carbon and has good steel with fine sharpening, this is more rustic and rough in finish but not shoddy at all. Coarser feel in the hand.
The Rough Rider small sodbuster certainly surprised me,very well made, nice to handle good tough spring and very sharp.Their Old Yellow series is worth a serious look for a cheap but nicely turned out knife. This sodbuster is more gent's style as it is smaller and slimmer than the others here.
