Hi, guys!

I'm looking for a high quality military-style foot saber (i.e., not too pronouced of a curve; more suited to combat fencing rather than the horseback cavalry slash), definitely with a basket rather than just a crossguard. I've seen the 1904 Austrian Saber that Cold Steel just added to their line this year...that type of design, I think. No decoration or engraving; just a good military look.

Does anyone know a maker or a source of a good quality saber like that? Anyone have one of the Cold Steel ones? What do you think of it?

Thanks!

What do you intend to do with it? http://www.militaryheritage.com/ Military Heritage has numerous models which might fit your needs, if you're looking for something other than the Cold Steel Austrian Saber. Be aware that these are not "sharps" so if you want a cutter you'll need to do a bit of work. Depending on how spendy you're willing to get, Baltimore Knife & Sword http://baltimoreknife.com/ will give you the option of buying either one of their production models or a one-off custom sword. Of course, you could also go the genuine antique route: Michael D. Long http://www.michaeldlong.net/ or Lion Gate http://www.antiqueswords.com/ would be my recommendations.

Thanks, Pueo154! I appreciate the sites; the Military Heritage one looks great!

I want it soley as a weapon, a dedicated infantry saber intended for anti-personnel; so I don't have a planned actual use for it. However, I don't want anything that isn't usable as the originals were intended; and if it ever were needed for any reason, I'd want it to perform. While I'd never abuse it, the design parameters of the originals had to include contact with equipment, tack (leather and metal parts), and other blades; so I'd expect that it would be able to withstand some level of unintential hard use without major damage or failure. The most I'd intentionally plan on doing with it is cutting tatami mats or other simulated intended targets (i.e., torso/limb simulators) in support of training in combat fencing.

While I'd certainly love an original in excellent, usable condition, I'd not pay the going prices for such a piece. But the replicas on the Military Heritage site looked good, especially the more recent British sabers. Do you know anything about those guys? Do you own any of their pieces? What do you think/hear of them? I'm also looking at the Cold Steel Austrian Saber; just haven't seen it out, yet.

Thanks, again!
