High Quality Smooth Steel for Edge Maintenance

I would like to purchase a high quality smooth steel to maintain my edges between touch-ups on the stones and was wondering which one you would recommend and why. Price is not really an issue as long as it is justified by the performance.

Thanks,
David

IMO a fine ceramic "steel" is a much better choice than a traditional steel. The problem with using a smooth steel is that all it does is straighten a rolled or deformed edge, and burnish or smear the edge a bit. The result is a weak edge that won't hold up well ... which is why people who use steels wind up using them a lot.

A ceramic rod on the other hand actually restores a freshly honed edge, removing bent and damaged steel instead of just moving it around. The amount of steel removed is very small and won't make any noticeable difference in the life of your blades, but will save you work and give you a much better edge than will a regular "steel steel."

Just wanted to thank you for your post. I had learned this once, but unfortunately had forgotten it. :(

It was a good reminder!

Got any suggestions on a good one to buy? Link/s? Thanks in advance. :)

I've heard nothing but good things about Idahone, like Zeasor has linked to. Also DMT and Fallkniven have ceramic "steels" sold under their names, both companies have excellent reputations.

You're welcome, and thank you, Mtn Hawk. I've learned so many things from the many knowledgeable people who post here, it's nice to think I can pass a little something along that's helpful to others.
