High Quality Steel Axe

So i've been thinking (always a dangerous proposition, it hurts :D) has there ever been an axe head (not a tomahawk, not a breaching tool, one with a hickory helve) made in a very high quality steel. Such as INFI, SR77, CPM3V, or M4 or something thats really nice and would hold an edge like crazy and be very tough. I think (ouch) that it would be an awesome combination to make a very nice piece of kit. What do you guys think? Or do you have any info pertaining to my question?

The question you should be asking is how much do you want to pay for it?

Making a $100-200 ax out of a standard carbon steel from a quality maker is one thing. The cost of the steel as well as the labor in forging, or stock removal, with something like INFI or CPM3V will begin quite expensive due to the size of the block of steel you would need.

I am unsure that CPM3V can be forged, so you will be looking at a rather large block for stock removal, then MANY MANY belts to grind it to shape. (I am also unsure how INFI is worked.) Both are very tough and rather wear resistant, perhaps CNC machining for the hole and some of the grinding would be possible.

You will be building a safe queen as nobody in their right mind would use one due to cost. That AND it would take a few for a maker to get it "just right", so quality on the first few may be off a bit.

Interesting topic.:D

i most definently dont have the necessary funds nor the fervent desire to pursue this further then thought for right now. But somewhere down the road when the world realizes my true genious and i become fabulousy wealthy... maybe... just maybe. JKJKJK:) It would also be interesting if anyone has tried or thought about how to pursue this rather trivial endevour. But still it would be a fun project for kicks and giggles

INFI and SR77 are propritority steels and are only used by Busse knife co. SR77 is S7 steel and is use in jackhamer bits, so its a possability it's been turned into an axe.

Most knife steels probably would not make good axes, because they are designed to be tempered hard, an axe should be tempered milder so it doesn't chip...

If I recall, there were a few Busse axes or hatchets made out of solid INFI, including the shaft. Ugly things that cost enough to fuel a small war :D
