Is it worth the extra dough for the ZDP blade ? Or should I just buy a Dragonfly in black ? Also, I'm trying to get a good idea of the particular hue of the handles on this knife but most of the video reviews don't really allow this. High resolution photographs of the handles would be much appreciated. Thanks in advance.

I can't help you with a photo. And there's way too many variables in photographing colors to know if a hue is really accurate to the original object. The color of the ZDP Dragonfly is a very dark green. So dark, in fact, it's virtually black from a distance.

Personally, I prefer VG10. It can take a super sharp edge and it's easy to return it to super sharp. Reportedly, ZDP can hold an edge longer but it takes longer to get it sharp. I've not used my ZDP Dragonfly enough to test that. Of all the Dragonfly models, I prefer the G10 in that sickly grey/green color...second preference is the plain black...both in VG10.

Thank you , Lee48. I would like to acquire the Dragonfly 2 because of its smaller size , and yet the blade shape with spine and choil jimping is similar to a larger Spyderco knife such as the Manix 2. However, when I handled it at a shop several weeks ago , I was struck by the asking price for the relatively small amount of knife I would be buying. It did remind me somewhat of a toy , after all. Don't get me wrong ; I would like to own this knife, but I want to keep the cost- benefit analysis in mind as usual. Anyway, thanks again for responding.

Got this yesterday , and already can see a long term relationship developing :)

Thanks, harronek. Do you mind disclosing the price that you paid for it ? I do like the knife, but I feel that it is a little steep for how much knife that one gets. However, it does bring to mind the Mini Cooper automobile since the knife is like the bulldog of knife designs. Or maybe the Jack Russell as in small but stout.

I cant really comment or help you with the price question because I live in Australia and we pay a huge premium over and above what Spydercos sell for elsewhere .
Only you can decide if its worth the money or not , but in my case I want to see what ZDP 189 is like and I also had a gap in my small knife selection .
This DF is a cool knife , for example yesterday I received a Spyderco Kiwi 4 at the same time as this knife . After an hour the Kiwi was in the drawer , and the DF was in my pocket where it has stayed ever since .

I have 3 Spydercos in ZDP-189, one of which is a DF2 and I love the steel. DF2 is an excellent choice for an EDC. I also have several Spydercos in VG10, and I love those too. In my opinion, the pics posted in this thread are a good representation of the BRG coloring. I agree that from a distance, it does look black unless.

I find that they both VG10 and ZDP take a very keen edge, but I'd give a slight nod to the ZDP. You'll notice the factory edge on the ZDP is screaming sharp and I've had good results with my Edge Pro Apex, though it does take significantly longer to sharpen than VG 10, edge retention is phenomenal. My ZDP factory edge did chip, but since I've sharpened it no more chips. In my opinion, where the VG10 shines is corrosion resistance. I carried VG 10 for several years and noticed no staining. I've carried a Ladybug 3 in ZDP everyday on my keychain since 2012 and have noticed some minor staining. Now I hit it with an oil rag every so often and no worries.

I'm always impressed with how well thought out and well engineered the DF2 is every time I use it. I have relatively large hands and the ergonomics make the knife so useful with excellent cutting power for such a small blade and overall package.

I can't help with a picture but I think I like my dragonfly a little better than my pm2. I have the green zdp. I definitely prefer g10 to the frn, but still like the dragonfly better.

Under a $ 100.00 price for a knife that you will carry and use to the extent that the Dragonfly allows and encourages is really negligible - if you think about it :). Not cheap but you are buying a true "durable good". IMHO.

To echo what others have said, the DF2 is one of my most used knives. I've got the black frn VG10 blade and the yellow H1 w/spyderedge. Both are amazingly useful for such a small package, and worth the money IMO.

Dragonfly 2 in British Racing Green

One on the exchange right now - Friday at 6PM ET. Not sure it's racing green but the OP says it's green.

Not a Dragonfly, but it should be the same color as this Delica. I really like zdp-189 and do think that it's worth the extra money. YMMV :)

Recently, I've seen the following prices online:

Standard Black FRN VG10 $52.00.
British Racing Green FRN in ZDP $70.00.
Nishijin Glass Fiber handle in ZDP $140.00.
Yellow FRN in H1 plain edge $51.00.
Yellow FRN in H1 serrated edge $47.00.
Orange FRN in VG10 $54.00.
Stainless handle in VG10 $60.00.
Stainless Tattoo handle in VG10 $70.00.
Foliage Green G10 handle in VG10 $75.00.
Purple FRN in VG10 $55.00

Prices vary so you may find them for more or less, depending on where you buy. I own several Dragonflies and find them worth the prices asked although the Nishijin Glass model is more than I'm willing to pay. As I posted earlier, of them all I prefer the Foliage Green G10 model despite not particularly liking the color. Least favorite models are those with stainless handles due to being a bit too slippery.

hlf, Dragonfly 2 is a great Spyderco model and all versions are winners, including the salt. If it were me though, I would spend the extra $20 and go with the ZDP model. I find that vg10 does not have quite the edge retention that I like. Its acceptable of course, but I'd be willing to pay a bit more for a bit more. I have also found that on a short blade like the dfly, the cutting gets concentrated (by necessity) in a small length of blade and the knife will dull a bit faster than a longer blade, so edge retention can seem lika a bigger deal to me on shorter blades than it is on longer ones.
